While beautiful taken neat, Scotch needn’t stay lonely in a glass. Don’t shy away from being a bit creative, either, as Scotch is a lot more versatile than you might first think. Whether you’re going for a traditional Whisky Sour or spicing up a Bloody Mary, try Scotch in a cocktail today!

Bloody Scotsman

90ml tomato juice
15ml lemon juice
1 dash Tabasco
2 dash Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch salt
1 pinch pepper
celery, for garnish

Scotch Sour

The Best Cocktails to make with Scotch Whisky Scotch Sour thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The classic we know and love dearly, a Scotch Sour never fails to liven up an evening. If you want to make this vegan, you can either leave out the egg white for a No-Foam Sour, or swap it for a tablespoon and a half of aquafaba (that’s the juice out of a chickpea can!).

Ingredients:
50ml Scotch whisky
25ml fresh lemon juice
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 egg white
twist of orange, for garnish

Method:
Add all ingredients to a shaker with no ice and shake. Add ice and shake for 15 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass over ice and garnish with a twist of orange.

Scotch Paloma

The Best Cocktails to make with Scotch Whisky Scotch Paloma thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

A Paloma probably isn’t the first cocktail you’d jump to when thinking about Scotch - Mexico and Scotland don’t exactly have the same atmosphere. However, swapping out a reposado or añejo tequila for Scotch keeps that same caramel richness while adding an interesting twist to this Mexican classic. If you don’t have spicy honey, regular is fine!

Ingredients:
35ml Scotch whisky
35ml grapefruit juice
35ml spicy honey
club soda
grapefruit slice, for garnish

Method:
Add all ingredients but club soda to an ice-filled glass and stir. Once chilled, top with soda water and garnish with a grapefruit slice. Enjoy!

Rusty Nail

The Best Cocktails to make with Scotch Whisky Rusty Nail thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Don’t worry, you don’t need to search through your medical files to see if you’ve had a tetanus jab to drink this cocktail. This kind of Rusty Nail is the ultimate Scotch cocktail of days gone by. So, pull out that bottle of Drambuie Scotch whisky liqueur and give it a go!

Ingredients:
60ml Scotch whisky
15ml Drambuie

Method:
Add all ingredients to an ice-filled mixing glass and stir until well chilled. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and enjoy!

The Godfather

The Best Cocktails to make with Scotch Whisky The Godfather thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Named after the iconic 1972 film, The Godfather cocktail adds a welcome bit of Italian flair to a classic Scotch. While the nutty Amaretto slightly softens the whisky, the almond-flavoured liqueur doesn’t take away any of the flavour. This recipe calls for quite exact measurements, but the ratio is really up to you and your personal tastes, so don’t take it by the book. This cocktail is an offer you can’t refuse.

Ingredients:
60ml blended Scotch whisky|
7ml Amaretto

Method:
Add all ingredients to an ice-filled mixing glass and stir until well chilled. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and enjoy!

Blood & Sand

The Best Cocktails to make with Scotch Whisky Blood and Sand thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

This cocktail is another Scotch cocktail that has been around for eons, first appearing in 1930! At first, the ingredients might baffle you - orange juice, cherry liqueur AND Scotch - but once you’ve tried it you’ll know what all the fuss is about! Stay away from very smoky Scotches for this recipe, and fresh orange juice is a MUST.

Ingredients:
20ml Scotch whisky
20ml sweet vermouth
20ml cherry liqueur
20ml freshly squeezed orange juice
twist of orange, for garnish

Method:
Add all ingredients to an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake until chilled. Strain into a coupe or martini glass and garnish with a twist of orange. Enjoy!

Flying Scotsman

The Best Cocktails to make with Scotch Whisky Flying Scotsman thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Named after the famous steam train, the Flying Scotsman is a cocktail allegedly served to first-class passengers on the train, which broke the record for the first steam train to reach 100mph! Both simple and delicious, this cocktail will make you feel like a first-class mixologist when you master it.

Ingredients:
50ml Scotch whisky
45ml sweet vermouth
5ml sugar syrup
2 dash Angostura bitters
black cherry, for garnish

Method:
Stir all ingredients in a cocktail glass with ice. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass, preferably over a large ice cube. Garnish with a black cherry. Up, up and away!

Penrhos is already a very well established distillery with beautifully crafted gin, but their Limited Edition Hibiscus for Aldi is a real treat. Penrhos Gin is made by two Herefordshire-based fruit farmers who use unwanted fruit to create the gin, meaning each sip you drink is reducing food waste (we’ll cheers to that)! This Hibiscus Gin has wonderful notes of blueberry, so we recommend garnishing this G&T with a nice helping of blueberries!

Best Gin for gin and tonic Cantium Gin thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

From first glance, you might not have realised that Cantium was even a gin! If it looks like it’s masquerading as a flask - that’s because it is! Once finished, the bottle can be used as a reusable flask to keep hot or cold liquids in. A plan is underway for customers who return their flasks to be given a discount on their next purchase, and for these empty flasks to be given to local homelessness charities. Tanqueray No. Ten Gin

Best Gins for gin and tonic Tanqueray No Ten Gin thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

You’ll already know this name, but perhaps not this particular bottle. Tanqueray No. 10 is the brand’s small batch gin, and the only gin to be added to the San Francisco World Spirits Competition Hall of Fame. Keeping the same signature green but perhaps offering a more elegant bottle design, Tanqueray No. 10 is distilled with whole citrus fruits and chamomile flavours to give an extra citrusy but smooth feel to this premium gin. Because of the citrus kicks this gin gives you, we can’t help but add a little wedge of grapefruit to our No. 10 G&T - but feel free to experiment with other citrus fruits!

Lind and Lime Gin

Best Gin for gin and tonic Lind and Lime Gin thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

This is not the first time we’ve told you of our passion for Lind and Lime, and it certainly won’t be the last. If anything, the history of this gin is something to be admired. Lind and Lime is named after James Lind, a Scotsman accredited to performing the world’s first clinical trial when he worked towards the eradication of scurvy in the British Navy. The ‘Lime’ in the name refers to a lime cordial that was created based on his findings which helped nurse the sickly sailors back to health. History aside, this gin both looks and tastes great - with a crisp citrus edge surrounding deep juniper notes. To honour the name and the legacy of Lind, garnish your Lind and Lime G&T with a thick wedge of lime.

The Glenturret 2021 Whisky Range

The Glenturret 2021 Release thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Words by Colin Hampden-White

Most brands in the whisky world have their regular expressions. They may start with a non-age statement whisky or two, then a 10 or 12-year-old, and then rise through the age statements to around a 21 year old. All these expressions are based on consistency, the idea that if you bought a 12-year-old one year, then it would be no different if you bought it again in three or four years time. This builds up a customer base who know your product and know exactly what they are buying.

The Glenturret is a little different though. They too, like other brands have a core range. They start with a non-age statement called Triple Wood, they then have a 10, 12 and 15 year old with the age statements culminating in a 25 and 30-year-old, which like most other brands are more limited and will change in profile with each release.

The Glenturret 2021 Release Bottles thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Where The Glenturret is different though, is that all their expressions are batched, and therefore change with each annual release. This is a deliberate decision. Each expression holds true to the previous in style. Their entry level is still a triple wood, the 10 year old a peated expression and the 15 year old a high strength expression, but the 2021 releases are different in flavour profile to their predecessors. Not hugely, but enough to keep them interesting. The concentration at The Glenturret is not consistency of flavour profile, but consistency of flavour quality. For The Glenturret creating whisky expressions is all about quality.

Recently the distillery was sold to a group that included a strong link to Lalique glass. Another company that thrives on quality. Being a hand-crafted product, Lalique and The Glenturret have a lot in common. Individuality, quality, and all aimed at a luxury market. It is special to own a piece of Lalique glass, and so it is special to drink Glenturret. The two brands have great symbiosis.

Let’s have a closer look at this year’s release:

The Glenturret Triple Wood 2021

The Glenturret 2021 Release Bottles Triple Wood thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

This opening gambit from The Glenturret showcases their spirit well. By delicate use of American and European sherry casks and ex American bourbon casks, they let the fruity side of the spirit shine whilst allowing gentle wood and spice characters to come through the spirit for a very well-balanced whisky.

ABV: 44%
Size: 700ml
Find here: £47

The Glenturret 10 Year Old Peat Smoked 2021

The Glenturret 2021 Release Bottles 10 Year Old Peat Smoked thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

A peaty expression at a higher-than-normal abv. This year’s expression follows on from last year with the smoke being sweet rather than saline and dry. Where the difference comes through is that there is less citrus fruit than the maiden expression and a little more orchard fruit with more richness. The two expressions are clearly linked by a good base spirit, but there are subtle differences.

 ABV: 50%
Size: 700ml
Find here: £54

The Glenturret 12 Year Old 2021

The Glenturret 2021 Release Bottles 12 Year Old thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

With lots of rich dried fruits and spice, this expression is close in style to its predecessor. It is the heart of the range and therefore makes sense to stick to a similar flavour profile. Being a small batch of casks, this will still differ a little from the previous release, but the blending is superlative, and the differences are only clearer once the two expressions are tasted side by side.

ABV: 60%
Size: 700ml
Find here: £46

The Glenturret 15 Year Old 2021

The Glenturret 2021 Release Bottles 15 Year Old thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Keeping the strength quite high at 53% is consistent with the 1st release. The use of refill casks allows the spirit to shine through, but there are also rich and spicy characteristics created by European oak and a small number of first fill casks. This is a whisky which expresses power and flavour equally without losing any of the finesse associated with The Glenturret today.

ABV: 53%
Size: 700ml
Find here: £110

The Glenturret 25 year old 2021

The Glenturret 2021 Release Bottles 25 Year Old thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

This expression has been created using only four casks all stored in traditional dunnage warehouses. A mixture of American and European ex Sherry casks, it is opulent and rich with baked apple and toffee flavours alongside soft spices and rich toasted oak.

ABV: 44.3%
Size: 700ml
Find here: £1,050

The Glenturret 30 year old 2021

The Glenturret 2021 Release Bottles 30 Year Old thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The pinnacle of the range. This expression draws on American and French influence by using refill American ex-bourbon casks and first-fill European oak giving an opulent mix of sweet oak and fruit with vanilla and rich deep spice and smooth toasted oak. A whisky to certainly savour.

ABV: 41.6%
Size: 700ml

If you’re quick enough there are still a few bottles of the maiden release left too and it’s a great tasting to try the maiden releases next to the 2021 releases.

Cardi B’s Boozy Whipped Cream?

The Bring a Bottle Podcast: Episode 63 Cardi B Whipshots thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

It’s only been 3 years since Cardi B released her debut album (which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200, was the top selling female rap album of the 2010s and bagged 5 Grammy nominations and a win for Best Rap Album), but Cardi B is everywhere. Whether she’s scoring number ones, dancing at awards shows or breaking world records, Cardi’s doing it loud and she’s doing it proud. It’s no surprise then, that she’s releasing a canned whipped cream infused with vodka.

Cardi is teaming up with brand consultancy Starco Brands to create ‘Whipshots’. The cream has an ABV of 10% and is said to be the product of four years of research. If you’re a vegan or lactose intolerant Cardi B fan, don’t worry - the cream is also dairy-free! You’ll be able to buy it in chocolate, vanilla or caramel flavour and it won’t need to be refrigerated. That sounds like a party to us!

The cream is expected to be available online and in stores in December, so be on the lookout!

Dine First, Wine First: Melt In The Middle Chocolate Pudding

On this week’s Dine First, Wine First segment we’re looking at pairings for the delicious melt in the middle chocolate pudding!

Aidy’s Pick:
Aidy’s picking an Italian dessert wine made from passito grapes. Passito grapes are grapes that are partially dried before squeezing and fermenting. Some of the best quality passito wines are produced in the Veneto region of Italy, and these are called the Amarone della Valpolicella wines. Unlike many raisinated wines that are usually white and sweet, Amarone (meaning ultra bitter) is red and dry. Amarone della Valpolicella wines always offer a full body with notes of fig, milk chocolate and coffee bean. Sounds like it would be a dream with a melt-in-the-middle chocolate pudding!

Colin’s Pick:
He does love his whisky, our Colin, so it’s no surprise that he’s picked the very whisky being drunk this week for his pairing, the Tamnavulin Sherry Cask! Colin wants his in the freezer to chill it right the way down, and then drunk just after a mouthful of that melting chocolate inside the pudding to bring out all the fruitiness in the whisky. Yum!

What is Mezcal?

What is mezcal thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

You may currently only know mezcal as ‘that smoky tequila with the worm in’, but today we are here to bust misconceptions on this intriguing drink and educate the world on what mezcal really is.

Where is mezcal made?

Where is mezcal made thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Mezcal is produced in nine different states in Mexico. The vast majority comes from Oaxaca, with the rest coming from the Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Michoacán and Puebla states. It is still mostly made by small-scale producers in tiny distilleries and its production is steeped in tradition, often being a family affair, with methods being passed down from generation to generation.

What is mezcal made from?

What is mezcal pina agave thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Unlike tequila which can only be made from the blue agave plant, mezcal can be produced from many different varieties, as well as blends of more than one agave. The most commonly used agave are Espadín, Tobalá, Arroqueño, Tepeztate and Tobaziche.

How is mezcal made?

When an agave plant is fully mature, which can take anything from 8-15 years if not longer, it is harvested, and the piña located in the centre of the agave is cut away from the roots and leaves of the plants and brought back to be roasted.

Traditionally the agave is slowly roasted in an earthen pit oven which is usually lined with rocks that are heated by wood. The piñas are piled into these pits and sometimes reach up to 5 or 6 feet above ground level. This mound is then covered with leaves and earth to keep in the heat and the piña are left to roast. Some, but not many, mezcal producers cook their piñas in ovens above ground heated using gas, wood or steam and a few mezcal producers even cook the piñas in stainless steel ovens with steam, but this is a much more industrial way to produce mezcal.

Once cooked, the piñas are removed from the oven and crushed to release the juice and sugars. The crushing method varies from producer to producer, some use a tahona, a stone wheel drawn by a horse, donkey or tractor, whereas other producers crush the piñas by hand with mallets or put them through a wood-chipper.

How is mezcal fermented?

How is mezcal fermented thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Once crushed, it is time for fermentation. The container for fermentation varies, but the tanks are usually made from either stone, steel, wood or animal hide. Often, at this point, water is added to the crushed piña and this mix is then left to ferment, however, temperature variations mean different methods need to be used in different areas, for example, in San Luis Potosi and Durango, agave juice is used to kick start fermentation.

How is mezcal distilled?

Mezcal Distillery thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The liquid from the fermentation process is then moved to the stills. Stills are usually made from either copper, clay or stainless steel and are traditionally wood-fired. Mezcal must be distilled twice to meet regulations although some producers distill it a third time for extra smoothness. When bottled, you may find some mezcals (usually industrially produced) come with a worm, however, this is not traditional. There has been much debate over why the worm has been added to mezcal bottles, though many put it down to a marketing ploy.

Aging mezcal

What is mezcal aging thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Some mezcals are aged before being bottled, giving them a different colour and flavour due to the barrels they are aged in. The aging classifications are:

Joven: Unaged or aged for less than 2 months.
Reposado: Aged for between 2-12 months.
Añejo: Aged for 1-3 years.
Extra Añejo: Aged for 3 years or more.

A further and much more common form of aging is Madurado en Vidrio which refers to mezcal that has been stored in glass containers for over 12 months. This method traditionally took place underground but these days is also allowed to occur in warehouses that have good temperature control. The glass aging allows the spirit to mellow slowly without evaporation and also without taking on any extra flavours from oak.

How is mezcal drunk?

What is mezcal thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

In Mexico, mezcal is mostly drunk neat or over ice and is often accompanied by citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and limes. In the US and Europe, however, mezcal is swiftly making its way into many cocktails. Try a Mezcal Old Fashioned - it’s a smoky delight!

Wild Turkey 101 is a fantastic first foray into higher proof whiskey and bourbon, with its rich but peppery caramel flavours tasty but not overpowering. If you’re new to bourbon, the high alcohol content of Wild Turkey might be a bit intense on the tongue, but this can be softened with a drop of water (which is totally okay to do, so don’t be scared). This is one for sipping!

Eagle Rare 10 Year Old

The Best Bourbon for Beginners Eagle Rare Bourbon thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

What could be more American than an eagle? Eagle Rare comes from the legendary Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, where bourbon has been made for over 200 years! Without that aggressive bite that other bourbons can bring, Eagle Rare 10 Year Old is silky smooth and very drinkable. You’ll get honey, burnt caramel and vanilla on the tongue, with a classic bourbon oakiness on the finish - perfect for someone looking for a solid bourbon at a great price.

Knob Creek boasts a bold, full bodied, flavourful punch of bourbon - as is evident by the higher than usual alcohol content. This is brilliant for beginners, as the price tag is very reasonable for such a rich, smooth bourbon. The notes of vanilla, oak and fruit are best appreciated when taken neat, and once you reach that spicy finish: you’ll be hooked!

Maker’s Mark Bourbon

The Best Bourbon for Beginners Maker's Mark Bourbon thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The beautiful, dripping red wax on Maker’s Mark’s bottle almost makes you not want to break the seal. However, we definitely recommend you do - as you don’t want to miss out on the rich flavour Maker’s Mark brings to the table with this bourbon. You’ll get delicious notes of vanilla and burnt oak on the palate, and a bit of spice on the finish. We love Maker’s Mark in a Manhattan (not just because of the alliteration), but do try it neat too!

Evan Williams Bourbon

The Best Bourbon for Beginners Evan Williams Bourbon thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Evan Williams has been producing this bourbon since (wait for it) 1783! Now that, my dear friend, is a damn long time to have been making bourbon. You can certainly see why, as this whiskey is so moreish that you’ll have to get another bottle! We love the smoothness of Evan Williams, especially with those delicious caramel and vanilla notes coming through. At such a great price, this bottle is a big winner when it comes to beginner bourbons - so why not give it a try?
