Best Wines for a Beef Sunday Roast

Best Sunday Roast Wines roast beef thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Fluffy Yorkies, crispy spuds, slivers of tender beef… who doesn’t love a Sunday roast? And it tastes even better when you’re washing it down with a cracking wine. Read on for some top grape varieties guaranteed to match the meaty gorgeousness of a beef Sunday roast, whether or not you choose to smother yours in gravy…

Cabernet Sauvignon

Best Cab Sauv best red wine for roast beef thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Are you a Sunday roast purist? Then you can’t go wrong with Cabernet Sauvignon – perhaps the most classic match there is. It really makes the beef shine; the wine’s tannins and structure hold up brilliantly against the meat’s robust texture and help bring out its flavour. Styles of Cabernet vary quite a bit depending on where they’re from, so shop (and sip) around to find one you like. Those from Bordeaux are typically lighter than those form the sunny ‘New World’ and are often blended with Merlot, so expect a balance of lovely black and red fruit. California, meanwhile, is known for bold and powerful, age-worthy fruity numbers and if you want something in the middle, look to South Africa, Chile or Southern France.

Affordable: Apothic Cabernet Sauvignon UK £9 // US $8.98
Mid-Tier: Slingshot Cabernet Sauvignon UK £21.50 // US $25.19
Top-End: Mt Brave UK £79.99 // US $99.99

Malbec

Best red wine malbec for Sunday roasts thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

This one’s a bit of a no-brainer. Argentina, where some of the world’s best Malbecs are made, also produces some of the world’s best beef so, obviously, the two will go together! Inky and rich, Malbec’s soft tannins and juicy, ripe sweetness make it a good pairing with everything else you’ve got going on the plate too, such as roasted carrots and crisp roasties. Don’t just stick to Argentina though; try Malbecs from Chile or for a more savoury, structured style, head to Cahors in the south of France, which is in fact the grape’s original homeland (and where it is known as cot).

Affordable: Tesco Finest Argentinian Malbec £8
Mid-Tier: Bramare Malbec Lujan de Cuyo £29.44 // US $39.99
Top-End: Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino UK £81.95 // US $119.99

Shiraz / Syrah

Best red wine shiraz syrah for roast beef

Whether in its more concentrated, richly-fruited, juicy and peppery form (Shiraz) or a more meaty, herbaceous style (Syrah), this versatile grape variety is a delicious match for beef. Old-World style Syrahs such as those from the grape’s original home in the Northern Rhône, can often be quite savoury and earthy, so make a good match for the all-important side veg (carrots, parsnips, you name it). Meanwhile, wines labelled as Shiraz, usually from Australia, are typically robust and juicy enough to make the beef stand out. Great halfway styles between the two classics can be found in California or cool climate, Northern Chile.

Affordable: McGuigan Reserve Shiraz £6
Affordable: The Black Stump Durif Shiraz £11.99
Mid-Tier: Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz UK £29.95 // US $27.99
Top-End: Mclaren Vale Yangarra Estate Ironheart Shiraz UK £89.97 // US $121.88

Grenache

Best red wine for sunday roast best grenache thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

It’s not hard to love Grenache. This grape’s got plenty of body, great for meaty dishes like Sunday roast beef but, thanks to soft tannins and lower acidity, it’s also seriously approachable and fruity (read: dangerously drinkable) with notes of wild strawberry and spice. You can easily sip it before, during and after the meal – it’s just as tasty on its own as it is with food, so it’s a prime pick if you’re draining a few bottles with friends over a pub meal where everyone has ordered something different. Spanish wines will label it as Garnacha, while Australian or Rhone ‘GSM’ blends see it blended with Syrah/Shiraz and Mourvedre, aka Mataro.

Affordable: Waitrose Cotes du Rhone Villages £7.99
Mid-Tier: Anayón Garnacha £22.15
Top-End: Orin Swift 'Abstract' UK £39.99 // US $37.99

Tempranillo

Best red wine for roast beef best tempranillo thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

One word: Rioja. Savoury, spiced and bursting with strawberry, licorice and leather notes, this medium-bodied wine basically goes with loads of different foods and that means every bite of your sautéed cabbage (if you like that kind of thing with your roast) is going to taste just as great as those roasted potatoes or green beans. While the region of Rioja offers us the most famous expression of Tempranillo, you’ll also find the grape grown elsewhere in Spain and in countries like Australia, where styles are sometimes fuller and more juicy, with chocolate and black fruit notes.

Affordable: Il Carretto IGT Rosso di Puglia £8.75
Mid-Tier: Altos de Baroja Rioja Joven £10.95
Top-End: Marqués de Murrieta Gran Reserva Rioja £48.95

Pinotage

South Africa’s flagship red grape, brooding, earthy Pinotage will give love to the roasted, charred flavours on your plate with its plum, blackberry and dark cherry flavours. Don’t be put off by the ‘burnt rubber’ character that it’s sometimes described as having; the very best-made wines have plenty of fruit, structure and, as they age, develop notes of smoke and spice., especially when you choose a more premium wine made from older vines.

Affordable: Swartland Private Collection Pinotage £8.29
Mid-Tier: The Bernard Series Bush Vine Pinotage £22.90
Top-End: Hamilton Russell Ashbourne £37.95

Sangiovese

best red wine for beef roast best sangiovese thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Even if you’re not fully ‘au fait’ with the Sangiovese grape, you’ve probably drunk it. For example, ever had Chianti or a Brunello? This Italian grape’s fresh acidity and earthy character makes it infinitely matchable with food, and it can take on a trad British roast just as successfully as Nonna’s finest lasagne. It’s also one of the rare grapes that loves acidic tomato sauces, If you’re looking for something quirkier, try Sangiovese grown in California (you’ll find some interesting takes in the Napa Valley) or Australia.

Affordable: Caparzo Sangiovese Toscana UK £11.15 // US $12.99
Mid-Tier: Le Volte dell' Ornellaia £28.99
Top-End: Antinori Tenuta Tignanello 'Marchese Antinori' Chianti Classico Riserva UK £34.79 // US $49.99

Cartografie Chocolates

health and wellness gizmos gadgets Cartografie Chocolate thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

You may be wondering why chocolate and wellness are in the same category but there’s a good reason – it’s all to do with endorphins. Turns out quality cocoa causes our brain to release a surge of endorphins, which upon interacting with receptors in our brains cause a surge of euphoria. Let me be clear– your average bar of Cadbury’s is NOT going to have the same effect. What I’m talking about is the purest possible form of quality and indulgence, handcrafted with cocoa sourced directly (and ethically) from top cacao farmers. Head Chocolatier, Kae Shibata is no stranger to this world, having spent much of her career in some of London’s most reputed 5-star hotels. Each chocolate celebrates the unique expression of region, couverture and cocoa bean variety. With their elegance and refined taste, these are without question the best chocolates I’ve tasted. The latest venture of Kae Shibata, Sven Britt-Hanson and Daniela Nunzi-Mihranian will send your tastebuds to a whole new level.

This revolutionary technology is like an indoor greenhouse, allowing you to grow seed to plant or flower in as little as two weeks. Tried and tested, we can happily swear by it.

How to Improve your Mood

It’s no secret that many of us are struggling right now more than we would. Most of the things that put a smile on our face are forbidden, but not ALL of them. That’s where today’s little tidbits of advice come into play.

Yes, there’s a variety of little things you can do on a day-to-day basis which within the space of just a few seconds can bring a little cheer back into your life and perk up your mentality and mood. Some may sound silly, some may sound obvious, but at the end of the day as long as they work that’s all that matters. Ready?

Smile at yourself in the mirror

It might sound ridiculous but smiling at yourself in a mirror makes you feel slightly uncomfortable and silly to the point that your false smile becomes a real smile. Try it.

Spend a little time with your pet if you have one

Comfort and knowing that we are responsible for someone else brings a great deal of joy to our lives. It also puts our mood into perspective. When we spend time with our kids or our pets, no matter how needy they can sometimes be, it brings a great deal of joy to our lives. It’s proven to emit certain hormones that give you a wider third-person perspective to realize that life isn’t all doom and gloom and what you are surrounded by is in fact very important and a beautiful reason to be alive.

Laugh

This one is a bit of a no-brainer. Have that comedian you adore or that TikTok / Instagram profile that makes your dimples grow. Laughter is one of life’s greatest medicines, so if you’re ever feeling blue, a couple of minutes of watching something humorous will set you back on good form.

Talk to upbeat people

Our brains and bodies release a hormone called oxytocin to strengthen the relationships we have with those around us. Your brain/body releases oxytocin to strengthen relationships. Oxytocin gets released during light caresses, sex, when someone shows they trust you, and sometimes even simply with talking. When released, oxytocin increases feelings of attachment for another person, as well as feelings of trust

Have Sex, Masturbate or get a Sex Toy

I’m not kidding – and while some people may laugh at this (good, I made you happy), sex emits a surge of hormones that really lift our spirit and mood. If you live by yourself or don’t have a partner then put things back into your own hands right now in your bedroom. There’s no shame in talking about topics like this. Mental health is a serious and complex thing and sex has been proven to have a positive impact on our moods through the release of countless hormones.

De-clutter or Re-arrange things in your room

Changing an environment can help us feel refreshed, enabling us to bust out of a negative mood. Clutter spikes cortisol, getting rid of it decreases it!

Listen to sad songs and cry.

Might sound a little counter-productive, but allowing yourself to get rid of those pent up emotions is a release. Once you’ve had that release your happiness meter is re-filled and you’ll be less likely to dwell on the negativity.

Compliment someone else

Tell a friend they look nice in a photo, drop a message to someone out of the blue reminding them of something you loved that they did. Basically, if you can give a compliment to someone, go ahead and do it. Research has shown that we get a spike in happiness knowing we are making others happy.

White & Rosé Wonders

Gran Moraine Chardonnay 2017

Best date night drinks Gran Moraine Chardonnay thethreedrinkers.com The Three Drinkers

There’s nothing quite like a good Chardonnay to sip as you wind down in the evening and right now this beauty from Oregon is piquing our intrigue. Deriving from the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, this rich, fruity and balanced Chard is bursting with flavour and the most important thing for me in a wine like this – texture. Some people love oak, others don’t, but this has the perfect balance, making it incredibly well rounded and sumptuous. Rich, but not overpowering you can expect to taste apricot, buttery lemon, kiwis and clementines. For those who love Chardonnay, this is for you. For those who don’t, I’d dare say it will convert you. AS

Marques de Murrieta Primer Rose 2017

Best date night drinks Marques de Murrieta Primer Rose thethreedrinkers.com The Three Drinkers

Imagine the most beautiful rosé you’ve had from Provence, something along the lines of Domaine Ott? Well, say hello to the Spanish equivalent. Honestly, it doesn’t get much better than this. Strawberries, cream and raspberries erupt from the glass and with it so much texture. You’ll often hear me harp on about that word – but for whites and rosés, texture is key for me! This is the wine to be popping the cork on when the sun shines outside (and when I want it to shine inside, too). AS

Size: 75cl

Changyu Moser XV Blanc de Noir 2016

Best date night drinks Chateau Changyu Moser XV thethreedrinkers.com The Three Drinkers

Allow us to introduce you to the first white Cabernet Sauvignon from China – and my god is it beautiful. Firstly, the vines are around 15 years old – which is pretty unheard of when it comes to rosé. The vines themselves are located in the Ningxia province with Lenz M. Moser continuing to establish his name as a pioneering force of nature for Chinese wines. Estate bottled for that final seal of quality, you can expect grapefruit peel, exotic fruits and an array of crushed raspberries and apple. Zippy and refreshing with texture – and as you know, texture is everything. AS

Best date night drinks Maruxa Mencia thethreedrinkers.com The Three Drinkers

Mencia is a grape that we will see exploding onto the wine scene soon as more and more people look towards lighter, crunchier, more refreshing red wines styles. Hailing most famously from Northwestern Spain, Mencia has similar strawberry and cherry-like qualities and high acidity, like Pinot Noir and Gamay, but add to the mix a touch of licorice and plum spice and a cool minerality with this one, which is made in tiny quantities by the same people responsible for the fabulous Contino Rioja. Mirabeau Provence Rosé Gin

When it comes to rosé my top choice for quality and value is always Mirabeau, which made me pretty god damn excited when they announced they were making a gin. While the base botanicals consist of juniper, citrus, orris root, angelica root and coriander it’s the Provençal twist containing a variety of herbs such as bay, thyme and rosemary alongside the neutral grape spirit and base distillate of Mirabeau Classic Rosé that really makes this gin stand out from the crowd. The result is a fruity and textured gin with lemon, coriander and citrus bursting with floral notes, rose petals and lavender. The story ends on a final note as those herbs add an extra kick of character to the blend. AS

Gran Patron Platinum

Best date night drinks Gran Patron Platinum thethreedrinkers.com The Three Drinkers

I love a good tequila, it seems to be one of the spirits I’ve really found an appreciation for over the last few years. If I was to name one house that consistently delivers quality across its whole portfolio, my mind takes me straight to Patrón. It seems there’s a little something for everyone and while I’ll happily get my hands on a Reposado for my margarita needs (quick tip, avoid the salt rim, it ruins the drink), I love nothing more than to sip on something of premium quality. That brings me to Gran Patrón Platinum, arguably the world’s first ultra-premium tequila. With each bottle taking around 30 people to create, quality is of the utmost level. Agave is individually sourced for its rich sugar content before being harvested, triple distilled and left for 30 days in oak tanks to create pure elegance. The result is a smooth and seductive nectar of agave, orange, vanilla, lime and white peppercorns. Pure bliss if you ask me and don’t even get me started on a Mexican Martini (google it, you won’t be disappointed). AS

A Trilogy of Fine, Scotch Whisky Distilleries to Discover

This month, we celebrate the limited season launch of The Three Drinkers do Scotch Whisky on YouTube, brought to you in partnership with Whyte & Mackay. During the course of this series, we travelled all over Scotland, visiting friends at various distilleries from Jura and Islay to Inverness and Edinburgh. Three of these distilleries were the jewels in Whyte & Mackay’s portfolio, each offering fabulously delicious, unique styles of whisky that are sought-after all the world over. They are Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Fettercairn Single Malt Scotch Whisky and, of course, The Dalmore. Here’s an introduction to each of these need-to-know houses with a selection of whiskies hand-picked by us that you simply must try.

Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky

The Unique Island of Jura

Jura Distillery thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Sixty miles away from the mainland of Scotland’s western coast, lies a remote island of rugged landscapes and wild waters. Just thirty miles long and seven miles wide, with the tempestuous Atlantic on one side and calmer bays full of seals and birds of prey on the other, it’s a harsh, cool climate, but one that breeds exceptional warmth within its own human community of approximately 212 people.

The Most Un-gettatable Place

Jura Distillery Jura's only road thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The island of Jura has just one road, one pub and one whisky distillery. With the population of wild deer outnumbering humans twenty to one, it is also a particularly remote place; one that was once described by writer George Orwell as ‘the most un-gettatable place on earth’ - and where he chose to write his final book, 1984. As far as distillation goes, Jura is perhaps quite an unusual place to create whisky, but the locals believe the climate is ideal - and the distillery itself is at the very heart of this small island community. Founded originally in 1810, the distillery fell into ruin at the end of the 19th century but was entirely rebuilt and reopened in 1963 in order to boost the local economy and rebuild the community.

The Jura Whisky Style

Jura Distillery Jura whisky thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The Jura style is smooth, bright and lively. Start with their signature series, which boasts nine super smooth malts finished in casks that are hand-selected from Europe and America. Trade up after that to their Rare and Limited series of aged whiskies and rare older vintages. There’s also an exciting selection of Travel Retail Exclusives, where the whiskies are finished with Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks.

The Dalmore

The Dalmore Distillery thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Not far from Inverness, on the banks of the Cromarty Firth and overlooking the famous ‘Black Isle’, sits The Dalmore distillery. When descendants of the Clan Mackenzie became owners of The Dalmore distillery in 1867, they brought with them the right to use the two pointed Royal stag emblem, which the family had earned back in 1263 by saving the life of King Alexander the III when he was attacked by a stag! Since then, under the watchful eye of Whyte & Mackay, The Dalmore has become one of the most lauded and sought-after Scotch whisky brands globally.

Where Wood is King

The Dalmore Distillery whisky thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The Dalmore style is founded on the perfection of cask maturation, where each expression sees this ageing in both American white oak ex-bourbon casks and their own, exclusive, aged Sherry casks, each hand-selected by The Dalmore’s Master Distiller, Richard Paterson.  Their core range consists of whiskies aged for 12, 15, 18 and 25 years and then, there is a growing number of luxury expressions with no age-statement, such as the King Alexander III and their Cigar Malt. We are also now seeing an impressive range of ultra luxury whiskies come from The Dalmore, such as the 1951 vintage ‘Sirius’ and other vintage whiskies aged in fine wine barrels.

The Dalmore Style

The Dalmore sherry casks thethreedrinker.com the three drinkers

The Dalmore is famous for dark coppery, rich and chocolatey whiskies with notes of dried, tropical fruit, spice and vanilla thanks to its exceptional wood programme. A close, long term relationship with sherry house González Byass that began over 100 years ago has meant that The Dalmore has exclusive access to rare casks, which have previously held exceptional, old sherries such as a 30 year old Matusalem oloroso sherry. It is these sherry casks that add to the quintessential Dalmore style.

 Fettercairn

Fettercairn Distillery thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The founder of Fettercairn, Sir Alexander Ramsay, was one of the first Scottish landowners to campaign and apply for an official licence for distillation amidst a sea of illicit distilling. He received the licence in 1824 and opened the Fettercairn distillery. Being no fool, Sir Ramsay employed some of the best illegal distillers in the land to ensure that his legal whiskies were the best around!

The Fettercairn distillery was opened in the small town of the same name that sits under the Grampian foothills in the Howe of Mearns in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It’s a quiet, rural place, where once there was a very special visit from Queen Victoria and her husband Albert, who had a secret stay at the Ramsay Arms just down the road from the distillery.

A Whisky Waterfall

Fettercairn Distillery Water Still thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

At Fettercairn, there has always been a tradition for doing things a little differently and in the mid-1950s, the distillers here found an innovative way to create a purer expression of their delicious spirit. It was the invention of a cooling ring. They found that if they poured cold water down the side of the copper still, it increased condensation inside, allowing only the lightest vapours to rise and be collected. The result was that even today, they still have a copper tube wrapped around the top of the still to continually pour water down it, thus enhancing the unique, tropical character of the new make and giving Fettercairn its signature, tropical fruitiness.

6 Must-Try No and Low Drinks

Best no alcohol low alcohol drinks thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Whether you’re doing Dry January, have quit alcohol entirely, are trying to moderate or just after some new, non-alcoholic, drinky treats to try, we are always on the lookout for fabulous no-low drink options to share with you. Here are some more we have tried recently and thoroughly enjoyed.

Lockdown Liquor Co., Grove Picante

Best no alcohol low alcohol drinks Lockdown Liquor Co. Grove Picante thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The Lockdown Liquor Co. was launched in 2020 as a premium blended cocktail company, with expert mixologists using top ingredients for their offerings. What’s more, they are a great company to support as they were set up to provide financial support to NHS Charities throughout the pandemic as well as helping other charitable communities throughout the pandemic with COVID-19 related initiatives.

Their Grove Picante is a limited-edition, alcohol-free blend created in collaboration with Seedlip and contains lime, chilli, agave nectar, orange blossom water and coriander. It packs a serious chilli punch and has a wonderful tang - a great non-alcoholic alternative for Picante lovers.

Crossip Non-Alcoholic ‘Spirit’

HELENA website images (41).jpg

According to Crossip founder and renowned cocktail creator Carl Anthony Brown, “not drinking is not just a one-off; it’s a way of life”. He created Crossip to combine a career in cocktails and passion for socialising with a healthier, sports-based lifestyle without the negative effects of alcohol. What’s more, Crossip donates 5% of all sales to good social causes ranging from mental health to addiction. These are flavoursome, complex drinks with a significant mouthfeel that pack enough punch to feel like a proper treat. Crossip also creates some interesting and very smart-looking mixers, such as violet tonic and fiery ginger beer.

Pure Hibiscus is bittersweet, a bit like a negroni, based on hibiscus with rhubarb and finished with wormwood and cayenne for that powerful kick. There’s also a great viscosity - this is no weedy drink! Try it with tonic or soda water with a slice of orange.

Dandy Smoke is the non-alcoholic choice for lovers of brown spirits, such as whisky or dark rum. Powerful and smoky, with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger and a refreshing, cool mid note of menthol, the finish ends with a punchy chilli and ginger kick. Fabulous. Try it with ginger ale and a lime wedge.

Fresh Citrus is essentially the gin alternative and a great all-round choice. Complex and refreshing with natural flavours of mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, herbs and spices it again, has great mouthfeel and a fiery ginger kick. Have it with tonic and a citrus slice.

Maria & Craig’s Distilled, Non-alcoholic CBD Botanical Spirit

Now, here’s an interesting concept: an alcohol-free ‘spirit’ with CBD! Maria & Craig’s is brand new to the market from Maria & Craig; the founders of CEDER’S and CELTIC SOUL distilled, non-alcoholic spirits. Together, they blend premium broad spectrum CBD from the USA with distilled juniper, sage, camomile and orange blossom as well as a few additional, other classic gin botanicals. The drink is handcrafted in small batches and the result is a subtly complex, refreshing; a little like a more herbaceous lemon barley water with benefits. Try it with premium tonic and garnish with an orange twist.

Mcguigan ZERO, premium alcohol-free wine

Best no alcohol low alcohol drinks McGuigan Zero thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

It’s fair to say that alcohol-free wine has taken rather a long time to get right! Thankfully though, we are seeing some great brands step up in this domain including much-loved Australian winery, Mcguigan.

The range includes a still Chardonnay, a still Rosé, a still Sauvignon Blanc, a still Shiraz and a sparkling white blend. Last week, I polished off an entire bottle of the Shiraz, slightly chilled over the course of an afternoon and it felt like a light wine and actually tasted of Shiraz. Happy days!

Find them at most supermarkets for around £5 a bottle.

Thomson and Scott ‘Noughty’ Alcohol-Free Sparkling Chardonnay

Best no alcohol low alcohol drinks Thompson and Scott Noughty Chardonnay thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

In terms of premium sparkling wine with the alcohol removed, Noughty has proved itself to be a very smart option. Looking serious on the outside, it’s made with organic Chardonnay grapes from Spain in traditional stainless steel vats and then de-alcoholised by vacuum distillation with aroma recovery.

Vegan and with impressive B Corp credentials, this is a crisp, elegant fizz with notes of baked, golden delicious apples and brioche.

They also make an organic Prosecco! We’ll try that soon and let you know what we think.

Why is Looking After Your Gut Important?

It’s no secret that our gut is our second brain. A heck of a lot goes on inside this part of the body and that impacts how we feel both physically and mentally. That’s why it’s so important to make sure we look after ourselves properly and maintain it!

Meditation for a Healthy Gut

We’ve seen a rise of meditation therapies to help people have a calmer gut, especially those who suffer from digestive issues like IBS. Nerva is a good example. Similarly, there are apps that allow you to track what you’re eating, how much you go to the loo, and what if any discomfort you’re experiencing. The best way to figure out what your body is sensitive to is by keeping track and while it may sound tedious, the longer-term benefits are worth it.

 Get those probiotics!

It’s a phrase we keep hearing, but for good reason. Probiotics help keep our gut healthy, creating bacteria that aid the digestion of food and fend off bad bacteria. If you find you keep getting sick or feeling run down, it could very well be that you don’t have enough healthy bacteria in your gut!

There’s a number of things you can eat to help this:

-       Probiotic supplements
-       Fermented foods
-       Raw milk
-       Varieties of cheese
-       Varieties of yogurt
-       Sourdough

Get a better night’s sleep!

Your gut and brain are in constant communication via our body clock. Notice how you get hungry and go to the loo at certain times of the day? Yep, hello body clock. Sleeping at the same time each night allows this rhythm to stay in tune – making a healthier gut and a happier mood.

In the same way we need to keep our brain hydrated, the same is true for our gut. There’s a lot of acid churning around and ensuring you have your 2 – 2.5 litres of water each day can help you remain hydrated and working as efficiently as possible.

Let your Gut rest!

If you allow your gut to take a break from food for 12 hours (i.e. after your final meal of the day) it begins to restore and heal itself – promoting the growth of healthy bacteria and wiping out the bad ones. Some bacteria such as Akkermansia Muciniphila really benefit from a good ol’ fast and help restore and strengthen the lining of your gut when they aren’t being utilised by the digestive process. Basically, eat dinner than quit the snacks – you’ll feel a hell of a lot better for it.

Uh oh… Alcohol and the Gut!

You may think I’m going to tell you drinking is bad… but it’s not. As long as it’s less but better. Studies have shown how a glass of red wine actually helps protect inflammation and disease, increasing the helpful bacteria too. The trick is to drink in moderation and not get utterly shizzled. Excess alcohol can lead to bad bacteria being born alongside constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and more, none of which are particularly sexy. As I say, drink less, but better and perhaps introduce a little no-low to your life – there’s a substantial amount of options these days.

Medication: Real Need vs. Psychological

If you’re guilty of turning to meds for any form of pain regardless of how mild, you could be damaging your gut – so just be careful. Sometimes when you’ve got a headache a simple 10-minute meditation can help put it at bay. Long-term use of NSAID’s (like aspirin or ibuprofen) can really damage the gut lining and destroy the positive microbes. This can lead to irritation in the intestinal lining, inflammation and in some cases bleeding. So before you pop another pill, think, do I REALLY need this or is it more a psychological thing?
