The Best Whiskies to Watch Out for This Year

Every year seems to see even more releases of whisky, and this year one of the things I have noticed is the rise of blended whisky. In recent years with the likes of Woven whisky, more people are understanding the quality that can come from this category. There are also more whiskies being released from beyond the borders of Scotland all of which I will reveal below. So without further a do, here is bottle one…

Perpetuity Blended Scotch Whisky Batch 1

The Port of Leith distilling company has been inspired by one of my favourite concepts, the infinity bottle. They have created a constantly changing vat of single malt and single grain whiskies from the three largest areas in Scotland, the lowlands, highlands, and Speyside. They are bottling the whisky in batches as the whiskies evolve. We know that in batch 1, there is grain whisky from North British and Malts from Deanston and Glentauchers included. It’s complex with vanilla and red apples and a little marmalade. Ginger, popcorn, citrus and a zesty finish make this a very good blend.

Bushmills 25 and 30 year old

Bushmills has in recent years had a rebrand and some changes made to the blending of their single malt casks with fabulous results. Very recently they have added two much older to their range. A 25 and 30 year old. The 25-year-old is matured initially in ex-bourbon and sherry casks and then finished in a port pipe giving lots of red fruit flavours along with the typical Bushmills tropical fruit. The 30-year-old was also initially matured in ex-bourbon and sherry casks but for the later 16 years of its life in casks first-fill Pedro Ximénez casks were used. It’s hugely rich and complex yet full of life and vigour, both are drams to savour.

Turntable

There are three blended whiskies to look out for from brothers Ally and Gordon Stevenson. With many years of experience, they wanted to help raise the appeal of blended whisky and have managed it in style. The three whiskies start with Track 1: Joy.discovery.invention which is a blend of a Knockdhu Chinkapin barrel, Linkwood Virgin oak barrel, and two grain whiskies, Girvan from a red wine barrel and Strathclyde from a Cognac barrel. Track 2 is Firestarter which uses a Caol Ila virgin oak cask, Benrinnes Chinkapin barrel and Cameronbridge and Invergordon grain whiskies from a virgin oak barrel. Finally, Track 3, Purple Haze, is from a blend of Balmenach from a PX sherry puncheon, Craigellachie from an Oloroso sherry but, and Invergordon from a sherry barrel. With each bottle, there is a predominant flavour; fruity, smoky and sherried. And all are excellent!

Nikka Days

The whiskies on this list are mostly new, but I wanted to highlight a whisky one should always be on the lookout for. Japanese whisky these days can be quite expensive, and for good reason, the quality is very high and the quantities for each market are usually quite limited. However, there is a bottling that I think really stands out in the cost-to-value equation. Nikka Days, is a Japanese blended whisky using both the single malt distilleries Nikka own, Yoichi and Miyagikyo. It is a carefully crafted blend with lots of fruit and some soft smoke in the background making it a great all-round Japanese blend at an affordable price.

Oban Young Teddy The Macleans

This is the second release in the series, the first being called Old Teddy, and both are inspired by father and son who both worked at Oban Distillery. This whisky is finished in Palo Cortado and Oloroso Sherry casks and although it is complex with lots of fruit it is extremely approachable and easy to drink. This can only be bought if you visit the distillery, and I know it’s a long way to go, but it will make the journey worth all the effort. The distillery is a great one to see as it’s one of the very few in the heart of a town, and Oban is stunning.

Morris Muscat Barrels

The Morris distillery can be found in the small town of Rutherglen. Not the one in Glasgow, but in Australia! The distillery is sited on the same site as the family winery, so there is a great source of interesting wine casks to use. This expression has been matured in both French and American oak but then finished in Morris Muscat Barrels giving loads of rich sweet fruit flavours and a spicy finish. Yum.

Kentucky Owl Takumi Edition

This special edition Kentucky Owl combines the art of Japanese whisky blending and bourbon. Takumi means ‘Master’ in Japanese and this blend has been designed by the master blender from the Nagahama distillery, Yusuke Yahisa and John Rhea from Kentucky Owl. It is a blend of 4, 5, 6 and 13 year old bourbons and has complex flavours of rye bread, toffee, caramel, and soft spices with apples and pears and a touch of chocolate.

Glenmorangie 15 Cadboll State, Single Estate Limited Release

This is an expression of Glenmorangie which couldn’t be a better representation of the whisky the distillery can create. Made with barley from the Cadboll estate, this is a blend of two harvests, matured in American oak and then finished in ex-Amontillado casks, which is master blender Dr. Bill’s favourite sherry. It is the third release of this 15-year-old whisky and is creamy and nutty with toffee notes and cloves. An elegant whisky, and a favourite of mine from Glenmorangie.

Ardbeg BizarreBQ

Another very experimental bottling from the cult Ardbeg distillery. Using double charred casks and PX sherry casks, they also used unique BBQ casks which give lots of flavour of smoked meats and grilled, charred peppers and coffee. It’s big, it’s bold and it’s beautiful. As a limited edition, if you find one, I wouldn’t hang around thinking about it.

Two Brewers Yukon Single Malt Whisky - Release 35

Two brewers is made by Alan Hansen and Bob Baxter, who are two brewers in the Yukon area of Canada. In 2009 they extended their skills by buying a still and began to make whisky. This has been made with fourteen different mashes and matured in both ex bourbon barrels and virgin oak barrels for over eight years. Each of their releases is different and this one is exceptional. This is the first UK release and there are only 132 bottles.

Wire Works Caduro 

This hails from the White Peak distillery in Derbyshire and is the first release from Max and Claire in 2023. It is a lightly peated malt whisky using ex bourbon barrels and STR casks (shaved, toasted, and re-charred). This is every bit as good as previous releases and the subtle use of peat gives extra interest. It’ll be interesting to see how their core range develops, and these limited releases are certainly worth trying.

The sweet, honeyed flavour of the vermouth emphasises the candied orange and caramel tones in Red Silkie, and the herbal notes play off the absinthe rinse nicely too. With those gorgeous dried red fruits, gentle smoke and warm spice from the bitters entwining, this is a layered and lovable concoction that I really think brings out the best in our whiskey! Method: Chill a coupe glass with a big chunk of ice. Once cooled, rinse the glass with Absinthe and discard it. Add the remaining ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir until they are cool and combined before straining into the chilled coupe glass.

I love a whiskey sour, and this particular serve is such a pick-me up. Every sip is silky smooth and the ripe fruits and spices of the Red Silkie come through deliciously with the zippy lemon and sweet syrup. Method: Add all ingredients into a shaker. Dry shake them (without ice) first and then add ice and wet shake. Finally, strain them into your cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon wheel or nutmeg.

I just wanted a little ginger beer to bring out the subtle fruity spices in Red Silkie and allow it to be the unapologetic star of the show. Subtle sweetness that’s never overbearing and bubbles fizzing on the tongue make this a triumphantly delicious and invigorating sipper indeed. Method: Fill your glass to the top with ice. Pour the double measure of whiskey into it and then fill it to the top with a premium ginger beer. Stir very gently up and down to combine without killing all the bubbles.

Kilbeggan

Set on the banks of the river west of Dublin, Kilbeggan closed in the 50s but the town of the same name rallied to get it up and running again, retaining it as one of the oldest distilleries of its kind in Ireland. It’s also named after one of the 12 Apostles of Ireland who founded a monastery nearby in the 6th century so this place is really steeped in history. The whiskey itself is distilled just twice so it retains that lovely earthy peat and honeyed fruit sweetness. The nutty malt makes for a gorgeously distinct peaty Irish Coffee.

Bushmills Black Bush

Bushmills is the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery with a remarkable and tumultuous 400-year history seeing them thrive at the famous Paris Expo of 1889 and survive prohibition, the barley taxes and a catastrophic fire. The craftsmanship has been passed down multiple generations which is part of the reason Black Bush picked up the prestigious top award at The Irish Whiskey Masters in 2013 and a host of other massive awards. It’s a classic caramel grain whiskey with a dollop of sherried malt. Think smooth vanilla, lush dark fruits, and a subtly biscuity zesty finish. The orange notes would make for a top-notch Rob Roy.

Jameson Crested

You may half recognise this as Jameson’s Crested Ten. Well, it’s undergone a rebrand because of confusion over the name and availability but it’s the same tribute to the first drops bottled at the Bow Street Distillery. There’s so much going on for the money. Expect delicate undertones of sherried fruit, scorched wood and apricot with peach with a touch of spiced nuts rolled in chocolate. It’s tingly with spice, smooth and creamy and the fruity sherry is never far away. Outstandingly smooth and complex for the price. A simple whiskey highball is best to give the liquid room to breathe.

Slane Irish Whiskey

Slane Castle outside Dublin is known for two main things; iconic gigs with the likes of Queen, Bowie, U2, Bob Dylan and Madonna rocking up and Slane Irish Whiskey. Three different casks (virgin oak, Oloroso and seasoned casks that are ex Tennessee whiskey and bourbon) create a remarkably full taste. The mellow butterscotch and vanilla is so inviting and there’s a rich caramelly baking spice on the finish to win you round if you weren’t already. Try replacing the vodka in an Espresso Martini with this for a richer, deeper coffee cake profile.

Proclamation Blended Irish Whiskey

A true Irish Whiskey celebrating the Proclamation and Ireland’s independence... even down to the ABV which is a nod to the 7 signatures on the 1916 document. A glass of history. There’s a touch of fruity caramel and crème brulée from the bourbon maturation and sherry finish.  An utterly delicious and characterful glass of history that would serve well as a sweeter Whiskey Sour.

Tyconnell Irish Whiskey

Tyconnell became one of the bestselling whiskeys in the US but prohibition hit them hard and they fell away. In the 21st century, they’ve enjoyed a Lazarus-esque revival and stylish redesign. Every drop of this single malt is super satisfying, with gorgeous, rounded cereal notes, soft vanilla fudge and honey on toast. It’s light with these indulgent flavours though, and not as sweet as it sounds. The mouthfeel in particular is exceptionally moreish. Try Tyconnell for a silky smooth Old Fashioned.

The Legendary Dark Silkie Irish Whiskey

We love Donegal’s ligther Silkie Irish Whiskey and the legend of silkies – seals that shapeshifted into beings of irresistible attraction on land. Now, they’re stunning us with their smoky side too. Harking back to 19th-century whiskey of the county, it’s triple-distilled peated single malt that sits in sherry casks, before blending with bourbon-matured single malt and virgin oak-matured grain whiskey – what a mouthful. And what a literal mouthful The Legendary Dark Silkie is too. Gorgeous fruits, confidently smoky with perfect peat. It’s a precision balance of savoury earthy notes and creamy fruit notes. Give it a go in a smoky Ginger Irish Mule for something very interesting indeed.

Diving into the relatively unknown, Kinahan’s The Kask project is exploring hybrid casks, with each constructed from 5 different kinds of wood – Portuguese, American, French, Hungarian oak and chestnut. That’s 5 kinds of wood in 1 barrel. From the first whiff you know there’s so much to explore. Behind that beguiling dark amber are teases of Cognac and Bourbon on the nose. The varied blend is super smooth and delicately sweet, with charred tropical fruits and caramelly chocolate, nuts and winter spices. Everything sits perfectly in this innovative blend so bravo to the experimental Kinahan! It’s sublime in an Old Fashioned providing delicious layers of flavour.

Writers Tears Copper Pot Irish Whiskey

This is an elegant combination of pure pot still and malt whiskeys from an unnamed Cork distillery that’s been plated in Gold awards over the years. Wonderfully light, the sweetness from bold honeyed fruits sits at the fore for a super easy-to-drink whiskey. It’s accessible to newbies with no harshness, but with the depth and quality to be sipped by whiskey lovers too. The honey would offset the lemon of a Whiskey Sour gorgeously if you like it a little less sweet than this sits neat.

Redbreast 12 Year Old

Redbreast are well and truly loved and lauded by Irish Whiskey lovers and rightly so. This delightful single pot is adored by critics, picking up pretty much every top gong you can imagine. In Midleton, malted and unmalted barley are distilled and then matured in the classic combination of American oak ex-bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks. The results are a really well-rounded body that lasts in the mouth. The smooth nutty taste has some perfect spice that gives way to a creamier marzipan and dried fruit aftertaste. This is absolutely one to savour so serve in a Highball with not too much ice.

Bushmills 16 YEar Old

We’ve another bottling from Bushmills here and what a bottle to end our list on! Aged in Oloroso Sherry and Bourbon casks before being finished in Port pipes this is a stunning dram with so much flavour to explore. There’s a perfectly balanced mix of spices from the bourbon seasoned casks and distinct notes of juicy red fruits, honey and peaches. Normally we’d try anything in a cocktail, but the only thing we’ll be mixing this dram with is an ice cube! NOM!

Tasting Planes and Tasting Trains: The Best Wine and Spirits Tastings

In the world of wine, a tasting flight is sometimes used to describe a selection of wines for tasters to sample and compare. Well, in New Zealand, one company has taken that to new heights by making it a literal reality.

Booze trains (and now planes too) are a growing attraction for drinks lovers like you and me to experience local drinks on the tracks or in the skies. Far removed from the usual hectic, cramped stress of transport, these idyllic odysseys are sprouting up all over, so here’s a rundown of a few you might want to check out!

UK

Real Ale Train - Watercress Line Dining

Chugging through the Hampshire countryside is the Real Ale Train. Departing from Alton Station near Farnham along the Watercress Line to Alresford, breweries from the surrounding areas will be on the menu with pints reasonably priced at £4, or half pints for £2.

Every ticket comes with a complimentary pint to kick things off, and you can buy individual tickets for £20 or secure a charming six-seat compartment for £150.

The Real Ale Trait also stops by the West Country Buffet where you can feast on chilli, burgers, curry and more before washing it down with more great local brews.

Keith & Dufftown Railway

North East of the Cairngorms in Scotland, the Keith & Dufftown railway is one of the most Northerly preserved railways in the country, as well as being one of the longest and gloriously scenic. Ten miles of line awaits between Dufftown and Keith, passing the Glenfiddich viaduct, mountain scenery, Loch Park, Drummuir Castle…and that’s not even half the journey!

Various events are held on board, such as the Whisky Train in Spring trying specialist drams from the many distilleries in the area. There’s also the Emerald Isle Express for £40 per person offering ‘whisky’ as you travel through the land of ‘whisky’.

Events come and go, but the same stunning route remains so it should definitely be on your radar if you’re looking to explore this part of Scotland.

East Lancashire Railway – Rail Ale Trail

East Lancashire Railway’s Rail Ale Trail takes you onboard one of their beautiful heritage steam or diesel trains and through the lush valleys and quaint villages, guiding you through the history and heritage of the area and delving into surrounding area’s brewing traditions.

Whilst you’ll enjoy a local bottle of ale on the train, this experience involves more guided tours to traditional pubs in the Irwell Valley and a hearty pub lunch.

The tours all begin at Bury Bolton Street Station, but from there they vary. Some involve short walks, others almost hikes. The price looks to be set at £59.50 regardless though so explore their website for more information! Journey goers rave about it once it’s finished so you’ll have to be quick.

It’s worth mentioning that they also have gin nights and wine nights occasionally too if that’s more your thing!

INTERNATIONAL

Invivo Air – Cloud Wine

The image at the top of this article is of the world’s first winery airline! That’s the promise of Invivo Air, who not only produce their own wine in New Zealand but have created a flight from Auckland to Queenstown to try them on.

30 guests tasted over 16 wines whilst cruising at 18,000ft, as well as a vineyard tour with winemakers’ dinner and overnight stay at the 5-star lakeside Hilton Queenstown Resort and Spa. That’s a lot packed in! Celebrity wines like Graham Norton’s and Sarah Jessica Parker’s are nestled amongst Invivo’s own and New Zealand’s finest, with the cabin even decorated with hanging vines.

Ahead of the launch, the founder said: “Invivo Air is the world’s first winery airline and we’re looking forward to guiding our guests through the ultimate wine lovers experience – both at 18,000ft in our winery in the sky and also on terra firma at one of our beautiful Central Otago vineyards.”

Otago is known for its award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé and Pinot Noir, and it’s not just fine wine but fine food included. Guests will dine at the Botswana Butchery, a new five-star seafood joint that has opened exclusively for Invivo Air. Local New Zealand cuisine such as fresh oysters, whitebait, lumina lamb and salmon are all on the menu.

Wine Train, Napa Valley – Legacy Experience

A legacy is handed down over time, through family and tradition. And lots and lots of wine. Charles Krug. V. Sattui. The legacy of these Italian families represents a combined winemaking history of more than 200 years. And some very fine vintages. Some say this is where it all began. And this is where your journey begins

America has some amazing wine trains on offer but one of the best-known ones is the simply named Wine Train. Their legacy experience provides a 6-hour adventure through the iconic Napa Valley, with a 3-hour train ride departing in the morning. After a welcome glass of sparkling wine, your first tasting occurs onboard the open-air car by your onboard Maitre’D at the legendary Napa Valley welcome sign.

After this, you have a four-course meal inspired by the stunning surroundings and a further 2 hours of tasting at Charles Krug and V.Sattui Winery, exploring 7 prestigious blends. Finally, it’s back on the train which is an attraction in itself with plush velvet, gleaming brass, smooth marble and a dreamy vintage aesthetic. What a way to explore one of the world’s most important wine regions!

My Old Kentucky Dinner Train – Bourbon Excursion

My Old Kentucky Dinner Train is two beautifully restored 1940s dining cars pulled through Kentucky by two 1950s locomotives. Departing from Bardstown which just so happens to have been named the Most Beautiful Small Town in America numerous times, the breathtaking Kentucky countryside awaits. The Jim Beam distillery, Jesse James’ safe house, and the Jackson Hollow Trestle in Bernehim Forest for starters.

During these two-and-a-half hours of exploration, a gourmet four-course dinner is served. On top of this, master distillers guide guests on a journey through bourbon history, pairing select liquids with your meals. The Three Drinkers Launch their Inaugural, Limited Edition Irish Whiskey with Sliabh Liag Distillers

Aidy Smith and Helena Nicklin, executive producers and presenters of the award-winning, drinks travel show The Three Drinkers in Ireland on Amazon Prime, have launched a limited edition, red wine finished Irish Whiskey in collaboration with Sliabh Liag Distillers - just in time for St Patrick's Day.

A New Whiskey for The Three Drinkers

The Three Drinkers have collaborated with Sliabh Liag Distillers, one of the new wave of Distillers in Ireland and a partner distillery for the show, to produce an Irish whiskey. The team wanted to create a spirit that showcased the historic, subtly smoky style of Irish whiskey while maintaining some classic fruitiness and adding their own fingerprint as lovers of fine wine. The Three Drinkers Limited Edition Red Silkie Irish Whiskey hails from County Donegal on Ireland's wild Atlantic coast and is finished in red Pomerol wine barrels sourced from acclaimed producer, Clos L’Eglise in Bordeaux.

This is the second product from The Three Drinkers, who launched a 17 year Scotch whisky to celebrate their first show, The Three Drinkers do Scotch Whisky, and which sold out within a couple of days. 

“We always had the idea to create a product for every Three Drinkers series we produce,” says Aidy Smith. “Meeting James and Moira, founders of Sliabh Liag Distillers, in episode two of our Ireland show and seeing the amazing work they’d done with wine finishes before, confirmed that they would be the perfect partner to create our own version - and we love the result. Whether sipping neat or creating some signature cocktail serves, it offers the best of both worlds.”

£1 From Each Bottle To Support Mental Health

Aidy & Helena have been open about their own journeys with mental health and are proudly supporting mental health charity My Black Dog, with £1 from every bottle sold going towards supporting a variety of initiatives. This launch also coincides with the duo’s involvement with The Big Bash; a celebrity auction event taking place on March 2nd to raise money for the charity with the likes of Chris Evans, Ricky WIlson, Gaby Roslin and Jeffrey Archer. Aidy & Helena will also be putting themselves up in an auction prize to host a bespoke and intimate cocktail session at the highest bidder’s home, complete with canapés from music-maverick, DJ and chef, Eddy Temple-Morris. “Certain events in my personal life have made me aware of the amazing work that My Black Dog does with their totally free, peer-to-peer support for those suffering with their mental health,” says Helena. “We have a chance to contribute and raise awareness of them with this project, so that’s what we’re going to do.”

Q&A

Why Ireland?

After Scotland, Ireland was an obvious choice for us, fuelled by a desire on both sides to get in touch with our Irish ancestry. My (Helena’s) grandfather grew up near the Giant’s Causeway in Coleraine and my lasting memory of him is always with a glass of Irish whiskey in hand - a fond sensory memory that will always remind me of that side of my family.

Why did you decide to create this whiskey?

When researching each TV series, we spend weeks getting to know as much of the food and drinks culture of our locations that we can and it’s important to us that we allow the adventure to live on well after filming. For that reason, we seek to create a limited edition bottle of something special every time we produce a show, so there’s always a little treat to look forward to later on down the line. It also means you can re-watch the series with a glass in hand - and we all love an immersive experience!

What inspired you to create a wine finished Irish Whiskey?

We loved the idea of creating a wine-finished, Irish whiskey from the off because we’re all about delicious drinks but also, getting friends and viewers to try something they may not have thought about before. The Irish whiskey style is famously easy-drinking with its tendency to be fruity and silky. With the red wine cask finish, we hoped to produce something that would appeal to wine drinkers wanting to try whiskey for the first time as well as seasoned and whiskey lovers.

We’ve been working collectively for nearly thirty years in the wine and spirits industries and have fallen in love with all forms of liquid during that time. We wanted to take a fantastic example of Irish Whiskey and combine it with another world we are so close to: wine. 

Where did you source the casks from?

We wanted something bold, beautiful, fruity and iconic; something that definitely had to be ‘Old World’, because that’s where we are from. When James gave us a list of producers we could potentially work with, we saw Clos L’Eglise and jumped at the chance. Why wouldn’t we?

Why did you choose this particular charity, My Black Dog?

Helena’s Reason: Most of us have had some sort of run in with our own mental health, especially with the pressures lockdown laid at our doors. I’ve seen first hand the damage that spirals of self doubt, anxiety and depression can have on individuals, their families and entire friendship circles. I have also, however, seen how quickly getting help can work wonders, thanks to the individuals at charities like My Black Dog. It does not only feel miraculous and surprisingly simple (when you get it right), but immensely life affirming. 

Aidy’s Reason: Having grown up with Tourette Syndrome, mental health has always been a topic I've had to become more than comfortable with. 80% of us with TS experience co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, dyslexia and so on - this can make life turn into quite a steep mountain at times. Charities like My Black Dog reinforce how important mental health is and save lives by getting people the help they need before it's too late.

I am frequently asked ‘What is the best whisky to buy?’, and the honest answer is it depends on what you like, and how much you are willing to spend. However, if a tight budget is set there is still a lot of choice out there. I have compiled a list of the 10 best whiskies to have in a home bar from all over the world, and all at under £40. Glen Moray Classic

Glenlivet 12 Year Old

Jura 10 Year Old

 A lesser known distillery, and one of the best introductions to island whisky. Both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks are used in the production giving lots of complexity with both dried raisins, honey, vanilla and white stone fruits, and a long finish. It is very smooth and easy to drink and makes a great Old Fashioned. There is a subtle layer of smoke underlying all the other flavours showing the east coast influence.

Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon

One of the greatest value Bourbon whiskies in the world. Four Roses is made up from 10 mash bills and four recipes which are blended to create a complex, sweet very easy going and versatile bourbon. The complexity and intensity of flavour lift this bourbon beyond most of its competitors at this price range.

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon

If I had to choose one bourbon to have at home, this would be it. With a mash bill that is corn dominant, but includes rye and malt, it is also triple distilled and placed in the barrels at a lower than usual abv. All this gives smoothness without the loss of flavour and complexity. Great in cocktails and just as good sipped slowly with or without ice.

Stork Club Straight Rye Whiskey 

Stork Club hails from Germany and is distilled just south of Berlin. Using a mixture of ex-bourbon barrels and German Napoleon oak, this is a bold whisky with a spicy back palate that is perfect for making cocktails, especially a highball. There are flavours of butterscotch and pepper with some citrus, especially on the finish. I’d have this rye whisky on my bar all the time.

Nikka Days

A modern Japanese whisky for the modern whisky era. Nikka days is a blended Japanese whisky using all Japanese spirits. Mars Kasei

This is a whisky I know little about except that it is blended using a variety of barrels using Japanese whiskies. However, I do know it tastes brilliant. It has aromas of wildflowers and a touch of smoke leading to a palate full of apples and honey and a little caramel. The finish brings in citrus and vanilla. This is a very good Japanese whisky and would deserve to grace any home.

The texture is super smooth and behind that is bold flavouring that you can bet won’t die in the heat. Fruitiness from the rum entangles with vanilla and caramel cream for a wonderfully rich and varied palate. Combined with the coffee, there will be serious flavours happening so it’s got to be worth seeing if you love it.

The Sexton Single Malt

Sexton is the go-to Irish Coffee whiskey for quite a few bartenders and that’s because of the delicious and authentic flavour. Made from 100% malted barley and triple distilled in copper pot stills, it’s then aged in Oloroso sherry casks imparting an inviting fruitiness. Vanilla, dried fruits and honeycomb sweetness are bold but restrained in the right places. The only negative is that the gorgeous vintage bottle makes it difficult to see how much you’re getting through, and when you take your first sip, you’ll see why that may present an issue.

Sliabh Liag Silkie Blended Irish Whiskey

The Silkies of Irish legend are seals that shapeshifted into irresistible beings on land, and it looks like some of them then transformed into whiskey bottles too because this is just as irresistible. Made in Donegal at the relatively new Sliabh Liag distillery, it is fruity and balanced with precision. From apricot on the nose, to honey on the palate and toasted caramel on the finish, there’s a sweet vein running throughout but it’s surrounded by plenty of character and intrigue that will easily shine through a hot Irish Coffee.

10 Must Try Irish Cream Liqueur Cocktails

Autumn is in full-flow, winter, Christmas, and a New Year are on the horizon, and the nights have drawn in before dinner is even cooking. One thing is in order and that’s Irish Cream liqueur! Indulgent, creamy, and delicious, it’s the perfect pick-me up and that’s why we love putting it in as many cocktails as possible. Below we have winter warmers, wake-me up Martinis and unusual pairings that will blow you away. There’s something whatever your mood!

Irish Cream Coffee

Irish Coffee is made by adding sugar, whiskey, coffee and cream separately, so why not go direct by using Irish Cream? It’s the perfect cozy cocktail for a winter pick-me-up, with warming coffee and whiskey flavours, and super indulgent cream. The definitive hug in a mug.

Ingredients
50ml Irish cream liqueur
80ml coffee
Whipped cream (optional)
Grated nutmeg (garnish)

 Method
Pour in your chosen Irish Cream, and slowly stir in your freshly brewed coffee, making sure to combine them thoroughly. If you want even more cream and extra sweetness you can add a bit of lightly whipped cream at the end. Oh, and let’s not forget a bit of grated nutmeg on top to finish. Nom!

Mudslide

The Mudslide was adapted from a White Russian in the Cayman Islands in the 70s - not what you might expect from such a tropical place! It’s since become an American stalwart, often being mixed with heaps of ice cream for a boozy dessert. Ours doesn’t include ice cream, instead focusing on the spirits and liqueurs at play because they’re too good to be drowned in ice cream (no matter how nice that may be).

Ingredients
40ml good quality vodka
60 ml Irish cream liqueur
40ml coffee liqueur (like Kahlua)
Chocolate (to garnish)

Method
Add everything bar the chocolate to a cocktail shaker and shake really well with ice. Strain into a chilled glass and grate a generous amount of choc over the top! Top Tip: If you want to make them look that bit more special for a party, melt the chocolate and dip the rims of the glasses into it. Then stand them upright and return them to the fridge for gorgeous chocolate stalactites!

Irish Cream Hot Chocolate

Next. Level. Indulgence. This is a wonderfully warming treat to perk you up whilst the nights are drawing in fast. It’s creamy, smooth and just perfect for fireside sipping if you’ve got a sweet tooth.

Ingredients
60ml Irish cream liqueur
100ml hot chocolate
Whipped cream
Grated chocolate (optional)

 Method
You’ll want to make the hot chocolate separately here, and how you make that is up to you. Some mix powder with water, others use milk, so choose depending on how lean you’d like this cosy cocktail to be. Simply pour it over your Irish cream, add some whipped cream on top, and grate some chocolate to complete the look!

Irish Cream Martini

This is a luscious adaptation of a classic Martini, with crisp vodka cutting through the velvety cream beautifully. It has more of a backbone than other options on this list, and if you pick out a vodka that’s particularly smooth, with a touch of sweetness or creaminess (Black Cow, Ketel, Tito’s for example), it’ll be a match made in heaven.

Ingredients
50ml vodka
70ml Irish Cream liqueur
Espresso shot
Coffee beans (optional garnish)

 Method
It’s ridiculously simple once you’ve got your espresso shot. Just shake everything well with ice, and strain it into a classic martini glass! Coffee beans sit on top gorgeously if you want to go the extra mile!

Irish Cream White Russian

This Irish Cream White Russian packs a bigger punch than the original, replacing most of the milk and cream with Irish Cream instead. It’s delightfully decadent and so smooth that it’s dangerously moreish.

Ingredients
60ml Irish Cream liqueur
30ml coffee liqueur (like Kahlua)
30ml vodka
20ml milk (optional)

 Method
Add the vodka and coffee liqueur to your glass, preferably a lowball. Fill it with ice and pour your Irish Cream liqueur over the top. Stir gently until cold and watch the beautiful swirls as the colours mix! Top Tip: For those wanting to taper the boozy edge a touch, top up with a little bit of milk.

Irish Cream Espresso Martini

If you haven’t guessed by now, we love Espresso Martini and all the spin offs. Introducing the Irish Cream to this classic takes it to the next level, swapping any sharpness for sweetness and of course, pulling everything together with an easy drinking creamy texture. A nice autumn/winter makeover of the original we think.

Ingredients
50ml vodka
35ml Irish Cream liqueur
Espresso shot
25ml coffee liqueur
1 tbsp of syrup (optional)
Coffee beans (optional garnish)

 Method
Half fill your shaker with ice and add everything, shaking until it’s cold to the touch. If you like it sweeter, add a dash of syrup. This can be a simple homemade syrup (sugar and water), or agave will do.

Irish Cream Chocolatini

Chocoholics, all eyes here. This Chocolatini is sweet, creamy, and oh, so delicious. Original vodka works well as a sturdy base, but vanilla vodka would also pair well with the chocolate and Irish Cream. Maybe avoid a chocolate flavour though unless you really just can’t get enough.

Ingredients
35ml vodka (vanilla optional)
30ml Irish Cream liqueur
20ml chocolate liqueur (like Godiva)
Grated chocolate (garnish)

 Method
Pour your vodka and liqueurs into a shaker and fill it with ice. Shake well and strain into a martini glass. Grate some chocolate over the top and eat what’s left of the bar. Yes, that is part of the recipe.

Irish Cactus

Tequila lovers rejoice - this one is for you. This is a cocktail that blends an unusual duo to create something very intriguing indeed. The agave flavour of the tequila lurks in the background, with the sweetness and fruitiness providing a really enjoyable second layer behind the delicious Irish Cream. Getting the right balance is important with this one, so experiment and see which does it for you.

Ingredients
30ml tequila
60 ml Irish Cream liqueur

 Method
First, fill your glass with ice, and then pour over the stars of the show. Stir well to combine and enjoy!

Irish Slammer

Now, this is a St. Patrick’s Day drink if ever we’ve seen one. Malty Guinness with its notes of chocolate and coffee pairs so nicely with Irish Cream, not that you’ll have much time to savour it, because this is supposed to be guzzled down.

Ingredients
25ml Irish Cream liqueur
25ml Irish whiskey
½ pint Guinness

 Method
Combine the Irish cream and whiskey in a shot glass and prepare your Guinness. Allow the foam to settle, and then drop the shot glass into the dark depths and enjoy!

Greenbeard

Another slightly unusual pairing with this rum and Irish Cream cocktail. The rum brings out the warming subtle autumnal spices of the liqueur really nicely, and despite being two very different characters, they blend to create something totally distinctive with lots of oomph.

Ingredients
25ml Irish Cream liqueur
25ml spiced rum
Whipped cream (optional)
Grated chocolate (garnish)

 Method
Simple again – just shake with ice and strain into a tumbler. Cream and chocolate sprinkles to top it off.
