Glen Moray: The Speyside Gem You Can't Miss

Glen Moray Distillery Scotch Whisky Speyside

Nestled in the heart of Speyside, along the tranquil banks of the River Lossie, lies a distillery that's been quietly crafting exceptional Scotch whisky for over a century—Glen Moray. Back in 2019, we had the absolute pleasure of filming The Three Drinkers do Scotch Whisky there, diving deep into their rich history, unwavering passion, and, most importantly, their delightful drams. But what sets Glen Moray apart from the rest? It's simple: they produce top-quality whisky that's ridiculously easy to enjoy, no matter your experience level.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Glen Moray's story begins in 1897 when the Elgin West Brewery, established in 1830, was transformed into the whisky distillery we know today. From the outset, they showcased a pioneering spirit by experimenting with various cask finishes, a practice that was ahead of its time and has since become a hallmark of their innovative approach.

What's Glen Moray Whisky Like?
To put it plainly - Glen Moray is a whisky for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned sipper or just starting your whisky journey, there's something here for you. They use pure water from the River Lossie, locally sourced non-GM malted barley, and traditional copper stills to craft a lineup of whiskies that range from light and sweet to rich and complex. Their Classic Single Malt is smooth, balanced, and packed with vanilla, orchard fruits, and a zing of citrus - think of it as the gateway dram to their entire collection.

Glen Moray Explorer Range

Glen Moray Explorer Range Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Glen Moray has never been afraid to experiment. In fact, they've been playing with cask finishes since their inception in 1897 - well before it was the cool thing to do. They source top-quality American and European oak casks, using both first-fill and refill barrels to create a range of distinct flavour profiles. Their Explorer Range features six whiskies, each offering something unique:

Glen Moray Classic Single Malt

Glen Moray Our Classic Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

This is the dram we keep coming back to, and for good reason. Matured in American oak, it’s a gentle, smooth sipper bursting with orchard fruits, vanilla, and a citrusy zing. It's basically sunshine in a glass, and at under £25, it might just be one of the best bargains in the single malt world. Enjoy it neat, over ice, or mixed into a whisky sour—it's endlessly versatile.

Glen Moray’s take on this Speyside classic is indulgent, rich, and ridiculously sippable. Finished in Oloroso sherry casks, this one brings notes of sultanas, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and sticky toffee pudding. There's a real festive feel to it, like a whisky-sized hug. Mix it into a Moray Clan cocktail (whisky, cream, and amaretto) or just enjoy it by the fire with your slippers on.

Yes, Glen Moray does peat, and yes, it’s glorious. This one is smoky, but not in a "campfire just swallowed your face" way. If you're already a fan, you’ll find this a lighter, more playful take on your usual smoky suspects.

Glen Moray's commitment to quality hasn't gone unnoticed. In 2024, their Head of Whisky Creation, Stephen Woodcock, was crowned Global Master Distiller of the Year at the Whisky Magazine Awards. Additionally, their Warehouse 1 "Phoenix Rising" expression received double accolades, further cementing Glen Moray's reputation for excellence.

If you ever find yourself in Elgin, a trip to Glen Moray's distillery is a must. Their visitor centre offers year-round tours and tastings, providing an intimate glimpse into their whisky-making process. Plus, being part of Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail, it's a perfect stop for any whisky enthusiast exploring Speyside.

Glen Moray is a whisky brand that keeps things fun, flavourful, and accessible. Whether you're dipping your toes into whisky for the first time or looking for a new favourite, their Explorer Range has a dram for every mood and moment. Glenlivet 12 Year Old

Glenfiddich and Glenlivet 12 year old vie for the top position of best sold single malt in the world all the time. Like Glenfiddich, this whisky has lots of complexity and lots of fruit. The Glenlivet has a slightly richer profile with some dried fruits from more ex-sherry influence, but this is a point of difference rather than extra complexity. Both are brilliant.

A lesser known distillery, and one of the best introductions to island whisky. Both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks are used in the production giving lots of complexity with both dried raisins, honey, vanilla and white stone fruits, and a long finish. It is very smooth and easy to drink and makes a great Old Fashioned. There is a subtle layer of smoke underlying all the other flavours showing the east coast influence.

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon

The Best Whisky Under £40 Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon The Three Drinkers

If I had to choose one bourbon to have at home, this would be it. With a mash bill that is corn dominant, but includes rye and malt, it is also triple distilled and placed in the barrels at a lower than usual abv. All this gives smoothness without the loss of flavour and complexity. Great in cocktails and just as good sipped slowly with or without ice.

Stork Club hails from Germany and is distilled just south of Berlin. Using a mixture of ex-bourbon barrels and German Napoleon oak, this is a bold whisky with a spicy back palate that is perfect for making cocktails, especially a highball. There are flavours of butterscotch and pepper with some citrus, especially on the finish. I’d have this rye whisky on my bar all the time.

Nikka Days

The Best Whisky Under £40 Nikka Days The Three Drinkers

A modern Japanese whisky for the modern whisky era. Nikka days is a blended Japanese whisky using all Japanese spirits. There are single malts from Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries and there is a delicate smoky influence that balances the malt and fruity flavours. With the rise in popularity and cost of Japanese whisky, this is great value.

Mars Kasei

The Best Whisky Under £40 Mars Kasei The Three Drinkers

This is a whisky I know little about except that it is blended using a variety of barrels using Japanese whiskies. However, I do know it tastes brilliant. It has aromas of wildflowers and a touch of smoke leading to a palate full of apples and honey and a little caramel. The finish brings in citrus and vanilla. This is a very good Japanese whisky and would deserve to grace any home.

Size: 700ml

Find it here: £38.60

Choosing the best whiskies to have at home for under £40 has been a challenge. There are still so many great whiskies to buy coming from all categories of whisky, including whiskies that would normally be thought of as expensive, like single malt Scotch and Japanese whisky. And what is exciting is that there are even more out there to explore in this price range. And if you can occasionally stretch to a little more the choice becomes even harder!

The Best Value Fruity Scotch Whisky

Best Value Fruity Scotch Whisky thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The showstoppers of Scotch whisky tend to be either powerful smoky whiskies or big rich sherry bomb whiskies. These extremes have their dedicated followers and certain cultures around the world have a preference for them. For example smoky whisky is particularly loved in Germany, and sherry cask matured whisky is loved in Hong Kong and China. However most whisky falls outside of these two styles, and it is fruit flavours which give them their popularity. Here are eight fruity whiskies which have great quality and are also fabulous value for money. They just happen to all begin with “Glen”.

Glen Moray Classic

Best Value Fruity Scotch Whisky Glen Moray thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

This "Classic" expression is the entry level bottling from the Glen Moray distillery. It has made one of our top lists in the past and is probably the best value single malt Scotch whisky today. It is distilled in Speyside which is known for sherry cask matured whiskies, but like most of this list, although they are distilled in Speyside, they are still part of the highland region which has a fruity character at its core.
