Au Vodka – The Most Talked About Vodka in The World?

If you’re not on social media you might never come across Au Vodka, but since launching in 2016 they’ve been making huge waves in the vodka pool. Through TikTok fame, endorsements from the famous, ‘Gold Gang’ and on-trend innovations like colour changing vodka, they’ve become one of the most talked about premium vodka brands.

Now, if you turn your minds back to Secondary School chemistry, you might remember that Au is the chemical element for Gold. So, if you’ve seen their all striking all gold bottle (or the two gold Lamborghinis on their website), that will make sense. Welsh duo Charlie Morgan and Jackson Quinn thought up the brand in 2015, and over the last few years, it has exploded. By the way, if you follow football, you may know Charlie Morgan better as the ball boy who was infamously kicked by ex-Chelsea star Eden Hazard in 2013. So, it seems he has a knack for going viral, whatever the means!

Charlie gained some profile from this, and with rap DJ Charlie Sloth on board too, Au picked up the pace (ironic for a sloth). With his connections, he established The Gold Gang, an extensive list of well-known ambassadors including AJ Tracey, Big Narstie, Headie One and Tion Wayne to name a few.

Innovations like becoming the first colour changing vodka in the UK have kept Au on people’s lips in more ways than one. Their new Bubblegum flavour begins blue but add a little lemonade and you get a vibrant purple! Pretty cool and perfect for Halloween.

It’s not just the rappers, packaging and bubble gum bamboozling that’s getting attention either, it’s the vodka itself. It’s a 5 times distilled vodka, filtered through charcoal before being put through a high-pressure gold filter chamber! No expense is spared here.

Count Pushkin

Count Pushkin has been making waves in South Africa for a while now, and it’s finally been awarded praise on the International stage too, picking up a Gold at the 2022 Vodka Masters. It was first bottled in 1965 but has been tweaked ever since and seems to have reached its pinnacle! The only downside is that it doesn’t appear to be available outside of South Africa just yet. After this award win though, watch this space!

Absolut

A stalwart of the supermarket shelves, Absolut Blue’s design inspired by an 18th century medicine bottle still catches the eye, and now it’s what’s inside that’s being praised too. Rewarded for its ‘texture and minerality’, it achieved a Gold prize at the Vodka Masters. It’s great value and ideal for a no-nonsense cocktail base, or even neat with ice and lime. Cheers!

Tamova Quadruple Distilled 

This is a stunning coup for Aldi Australia whose Tamova Vodka came out on top of 139 competitors, earning a prestigious Masters Award. Part of the everyday range but with a quality you definitely don’t find every day, this velvet smooth spirit is simply perfect in your Cosmos or Bloody Marys. Right now, the four times distilled version is only on shelves down under, so we have a short wait to try it. In the meantime, the triple distilled Tamova is also well worth a try.

Mid-tier £21-£30

Black Cow

This is a rather unusual vodka that has been on everyone’s lips in more ways than one. It’s created on a West Dorset dairy farm and claims to be the world’s first pure milk vodka. The whey left over from the farm’s cheddar (also top notch by the way) isn’t wasted, and instead goes into Black Cow. Unsurprisingly this creates a subtle creamy note and as a result, it is amazing at the heart of an Espresso Martini, but it is flavoursome enough to enjoy neat too.

Stalinskaya Gold

Sharing the top award with Black Cow is Romania’s finest, Stalinskaya Gold. Using pure water from 170 metres below ground, this mineral rich and finely filtered vodka has a surprisingly creamy finish and will no doubt be available elsewhere very soon. We can’t wait to try it!

Koskenkorva Original

Chapel Down Chardonnay

You might be wondering what Chardonnay is doing on a list like this?! Well, well-known winery, Chapel Down, are at home working with grapes, and they’ve taken this into their vodka production too. Distilled Chardonnay grape skins go into this ultra-smooth spirit that picked up all the plaudits at the awards this year. It’s a very smooth vodka with notes of vanilla and citrus. Another gin specialist dipping their toe into the vodka industry here, with a crisp 100% British wheat spirit. Cobalte

Broken Clock

Hidgate’s Broken Clock is produced at one of England’s oldest distilleries in Cheshire infused with apples and a smorgasbord (we’ve been waiting to use that word) of botanicals discovered in old Georgian recipes. Cove

The British invasion of the top-end vodkas continues as we head to Devon for this one. Like its offshore competitor Royal Mash, it’s a potato-based vodka using King Edwards grown locally. Overlooking Hope Cove and distilling with a row of copper pots, the production site looks as blissful as this tastes. It’s a straightforward creamy vodka. Nom!

Griffiths Brothers Vodka

A family run distillery deep in the Chiltern Hills, GB began as two brothers challenging each other to make the best gin. Years later, they’re now making not only gin but rum and now vodka too! It’s re-distilled with samphire, lemon and most peculiarly, horseradish. ‘Jack of all trades and master of all’ it seems, as this vodka has been awarded a Gold at the 2022 Vodka Masters.

X Muse Vodka

The world of vodka is changing. In the old days, vodka was considered to be better the less flavour it had. In competitions until very recently, if vodka had flavour it would not get any medals. Now, I don’t mean flavoured vodkas, that’s a totally different category, I mean vodka, with flavour.

I recently came across a vodka that has incredible flavour, in fact flavour was put at the forefront of its creation. X Muse is a barley vodka using old varieties of Maris Otter and Plumage Archer from the early 20th century, blending them together once distilled, and then bottled, all in Scotland.

Where is X Muse Vodka Made?

The Vodka has been created by Robert Wilson, owner of the Bonnington Estate which is found outside Edinburgh, and Vadim Grigoryan, an expert in the drinks industry. The estate holds the most important collection of modern sculptures in Europe and is home to a sculpture by Ian Hamilton Smith Finlay called X muse (pronounced Tenth Muse). In mythology, the Tenth muse was a blend of the other 9 muses and symbolizes harmony and perfection, hence the name for the vodka with its blended credentials. Robert Wilson is well known for his beliefs around homeopathy, and therefore the power and healing quality water can have. The water for the Tenth Muse comes from an aquafer at Jupiter Artland, the sculpture park on the Bonnington estate creating another link from the vodka to its creator.

What does X Muse Vodka taste like?

With a good story and provenance the vodka thankfully also tastes wonderful. With a nose of estery apples and pears, giving both fresh and cooked fruits there is plenty of complexity. There is a character of delicate fruity new make spirit which as a whisky lover I found intoxicating. On the palate, there is plenty of sweetness with more orchard fruit which is baked and richer in character than on the nose. There are also touches of ginger, and nutmeg and the mouthfeel has lots of viscosity. The finish brings back fresh fruits and more ginger with soft spices.

The Vodka is fabulous in a cocktail. A particular favourite is Garda Muse created by Denis Broci of Claridges in London. Inspired by Lake Garda, famous for its green water, olive oil and lacustrine algae, the cocktail’s ingredients comprise of:

60ml X Muse
10ml Cinzano Biano
2.5ml Kummel
2.5ml Coconut (Bristol)
3 Dashes of Olive lemon oil

Method
Stir ingredients down and fine strain into a coup.

On the estate, there is a permanent “temple”, a place to go and have a tasting experience designed by famous designers Formafantasma who have created a bespoke brand experience for X muse. Having designed the central pavilion at this years Biennial in Venice, this is their first work completed in Scotland.

The Best Irish Whiskey

Not only did Ireland beat the English at the weekend, but my Celtic cousins have one of their most important national days this week. St Patrick’s Day is not only important in Ireland, but also celebrated across the globe, and not only by the Irish. It gives us all a great excuse (not that we really need one), to find our favourite bottles of Irish whiskey, pop those corks, twist those caps and pour some of the delicious whiskey and celebrate with them.

Irish whiskey is now certainly out of the doldrums. It wasn’t very long ago that there were only two distilleries in Ireland, Bushmills and Midleton, until in 1987 when Cooley come along, and now the storey is entirely different. There are now over 35 distilleries up and running with more in the pipeline. When in the past, I wouldn’t have had to look long at my bottle shelf to find that favourite bottle of Irish whiskey, this St Patrick’s Day, it’s going to take a lot longer. And there’s likely to be more than one or two bottles sampled!

I’ve put together my most enjoyable bottles. Some are old favourites, some are very new, all I know is that they are all delicious, and would make St Patrick proud.

Redbreast 12

I have no idea how many times I’ve written about this whiskey. It is an all-time great and having just spoken to Billy Leighton, their master blender, it’s not going anywhere soon. With a perfect balance of ex Bourbon and ex Sherry cask matured whiskey, this is my ultimate pot still Irish whiskey.

Midleton very rare 2021

I have tried many of the Very Rare series from Midleton and haven’t had a weak vintage release yet. First started in 1984, as the years roll on the whiskey placed in the bottle gets older and older and this 21 year old release has whiskies well over 30 years old inside. I tried this last year and was blown away. A real treat.

Bushmills 10 year old

Another classic on the Irish whiskey scene. Bushmills 10 is a fruit forward, vanilla hugging, spicey dram of loveliness. Easy to drink and can be paired with so many different foods, this is a whiskey I shall always have on my shelf. If you want a typical Irish triple distilled whiskey, then this is one for you.

Waterford The Cuvée

Waterford are known for having terroir driven whiskies. Using old grain varieties distilled from single farms giving unique flavours from each farm. However, they also created a blend of single malt whisky. I know that is a bit of an oxymoron, but they took the whisky distilled from different farms and blended them together. Of course, each whisky in the blend was distilled at Waterford, and therefore still a single malt. The result is a beautifully balanced Irish whisky at a powerful 50% abv which is now a firm favourite of mine.

Jameson

The all time best selling Irish whiskey in the world. And for a very good reason. It is simply brilliant. Smooth and fruity with a price tag that won’t break the bank. It is as happy in a glass with ice, mixed with coke or in a cocktail as well as simply by itself enjoyed by a warming fire. This is not just a safe bet if you can’t think of anything else this St. Patrick’s day. It’s a sure bet.

Roe & Co

I have to admit to being bias about Roe and Coe. It’s distilled by one of my best friends, which gives me all the more reason to love it. Lora Hemy has done a magnificent job creating one of Ireland’s newest whiskies, and this isn’t going to be a flash in the pan. With innovation at the fore, Roe & Coe is going to be an exciting dram to have now and on future St Patrick days.

Kilbeggan

One of the oldest sites of known distillation in Ireland, this reborn distillery is lovely and honied and malty. However unusually for an Irish whiskey, it has a little smoke in the background, which is well balanced and gives depth. Something a little different, but one I like very much and I’m sure you will too especially if you don’t like it too smoky.

Slane Special Edition

In homage to the music festival at Slane Castle, Slane Whiskey has created this special edition. The festival was started in 1981 with the first headline band being Thin Lizzie, an Irish band known for their song “Whiskey in the jar”. This whiskey has been created with increased use of virgin oak and a mix of both ex bourbon and ex sherry casks. With a higher-than-normal abv of 45%, this turns the flavour volume up to 11!

Muff Liquor Company Irish Potato Vodka

I know this isn’t a whiskey, but I do know there is the odd person out there who doesn’t enjoy whiskey but would nevertheless want to enjoy a spirit on St Patrick’s day and this vodka is a cracker. Flavoursome by itself and brilliant in a cocktail, and no self respecting whiskey drinker would shy away from having a crack and chinking a glass with you on Thursday and exclaiming, “Slainte”!
