Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV & Film

Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV and Film thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

You only had to see the surge in popularity for the Negroni Sbagliato after House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy namedropped it to know the power TV & Film can have on drinks. D’Arcy’s response to being asked about her favourite cocktail went viral on TikTok and just like that, the next generation is ordering a cocktail that long pre-dates them – and that wasn’t even in the programme itself!

These are some of the drinks that are synonymous with iconic film and TV, and even stole the spotlight themselves, from Hollywood’s Golden Age through to modern-day Netflix hits. Let’s start with a bang!

What drink is James Bond known for?

What drink is James Bond known for? Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV and Film thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

We couldn’t start anywhere else but James Bond and the suave sophistication of the Vodka Martini. It’s practically impossible to not follow that with, ‘shaken not stirred’ just as the original recipe dictates. Bond does swerve from tradition however, because gin came first whereas he opts for vodka.

Bond’s Vodka with Vermouth and a little lemon peel is the most famous drink in cinema, but did you know that in the Ian Fleming novels, the agent actually prefers Scotch and soda? Sean Connery ordering those instead would have been very different.

What drink is The Big Lebowski known for?

Created by the prolific Coen Brothers, the 90s hit is a cult classic with Jeff Bridges’ ‘The Dude’ at the centre of everything. Defined by his full head of blond hair, dark sunglasses, loose jogging bottoms and a sweater, he loved a White Russian, or ‘Caucasian’ as he called it.

The combination of vodka, coffee liqueur and cream crops up nine times in the film!  He’s often making one, drinking one, carrying one or generally finding a way to get to one, and because of the film’s cult status, many fans found themselves doing the same after watching.

What drink is Moulin Rouge known for?

What drink is Moulin Rouge known for? Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV and Film thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Absinthe is the umbrella term for very strong anise-flavoured spirits, and because of the alcohol content it’s often dismissed. Not by Moulin Rouge though. It has been banned in many countries in the 20th century, earning it a reputation for mystery and debauchery. The five main characters gulp down absinthe in excess and experience hallucinations, including seeing The Green Fairy played by Kylie Minogue. Pretty much the opposite of a quiet one down the pub.

What drink is The Great Gatsby known for?

Particularly in the novel, the Mint Julep cocktail is ever-present. Daisy Buchanan loves it and is often holding one, as displayed by Carey Mulligan in the 2013 film. But what is it? It’s an iconic southern Bourbon-based cocktail that adds sugar, water, crushed ice and crucially, fresh mint. Within the narrative, Gatsby is a breath of fresh air who makes his money from bourbon smuggling, so the cocktail with mirroring characteristics represents her yearning for him. Or maybe that’s just a coincidence!

What drink is Mad Men known for?

What drink is Mad Men known for? Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV and Film thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Mad Men is one of the most admired and enjoyed series of all time, making Don Draper a household name. Set in 1960s Manhattan, drinking features heavily and as Draper’s favourite drink, The Old Fashioned went from declining popularity to one of the most, if not the most popular cocktail of the 2010s. To make it like Draper, saturate a sugar cube with bitters, dash with water, fill with ice cubes, add whiskey and garnish with orange or cherry.

What do they drink in Sex and the City?

What do they drink in Sex and the City? Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV and Film thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

The Cosmopolitan may be the closest thing there is to a fifth Sex and the City member. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda get around to trying most drinks throughout the hit films, but the Cosmo remains their constant.

Playing such a starring role in the lives of girlfriends living in New York, the Cosmo enjoyed the spotlight as much as the actors and it became one of the most ordered cocktails of the modern era. They order it so many times that there isn’t one recipe, but generally, it’s vodka, triple sec and cranberry juice with a dash of lime. There are even forums ranking all the Cosmos that appear in the show – that’s how you know it’s iconic.

What do they drink in Harry Potter?

What do they drink in Harry Potter? Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV and Film thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

This is the first drink on the list that didn’t exist until it featured on the screen; the legendary Butterbeer. It is without a doubt the go-to beverage of the Wizarding World and is described as tasting like, ‘less-sickly butterscotch’.

In Harry Potter, butterbeer gives people a slight buzz but whether that’s from sugar or alcohol or some otherworldly ingredients isn’t clear. At Universal Studios, it is alcohol-free but if you combine butterscotch schnapps, vodka, cream soda and milkshake-style toppings you’ll have something close to Butterbeer at home!

What drink is The Blues Brothers known for?

What drink is The Blues Brothers known for? Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV and Film thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

This one is difficult to miss, because Jake Candy’s character repeats his order four times saying, “Who wants an Orange Whip? Orange Whip? Orange Whip? Three Orange Whips!” The 1980s musical comedy was a huge success, and this line has been referenced in popular culture. But what is Orange Whip?

It’s a sweet cocktail with rum, vodka, cream and orange juice that’s usually blended to create a delicious froth poured over ice. The funny thing is it isn’t even in the script! Orange Whip’s sales director provided the refreshments and asked if it could be mentioned in the film, and the improvisation included not one but four mentions! What a result for him!

What drink is Casablanca known for?

What drink is Casablanca known for? Iconic Cocktails and Drinks from TV and Film thethreedrinkers.com the three drinkers

Any film buff is familiar with one of the most legendary romances of all time, 1943’s Casablanca. Not just a hit for Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, it also shot the French 75 to stardom. This fizzing cocktail using Cognac, Champagne, gin, syrup and a little lemon zest was named after the French 75mm gun used in World War One. Just like the film, the drink is fantastically bittersweet and the only drink ordered by name in the entire film.

For a long time, The Gibson Martini was obscure. Constructed in the same way as any other Martini, it differs by opting for a controversial pickled onion instead of the conventional olive or lemon. One person who loves this concoction is Beth Harmon, and her Mother too.

Always one move ahead, genius chess player Beth’s love for the Gibson Martini sparked a trend with the 62 million viewers of the show and is responsible for a surge in popularity. Maybe even Bond will be asking for a Gibson Martini in future films? “Shaken, not stirred and with the biggest pickled onion you’ve got!” – we can see it now!

We’ve got detailed recipes for most of these on the Cocktails part of our website and if you’re looking for more celebrity news, why not check out these Celebrity Owned Tequilas?!

What Drinks Go Best With Pancakes?

What Drinks Goes Best With Pancakes? The Three Drinkers

When Shrove Tuesday rolls around, pancakes are obviously the star of the show. However, finding the right drink to wash them down levels up everything. Don’t get us wrong, coffee, tea, juice and the usuals are fine, but drinks like these are how you celebrate in style.

The variety of toppings can make the accompanying drink a tricky one to decide, but whatever you’re going for this Pancake Day, we’ve got an idea below to perfectly match.

WINE

Fizzy Cocktail

WINE Fizzy Cocktail What Drinks Goes Best With Pancakes? The Three Drinkers

Sparkling wine cocktails are gorgeous alongside pancakes. If you’ve gone for rich and thick toppings like banana then the light bubbles cut through wonderfully, and any fruity flavour will obviously complement.

A glass of orange juice is obviously a safe bet when it comes to washing down pancakes but why not add some bubbles (Cava is great) for an even more refreshing Mimosa?

Or perhaps a beautiful Bellini if you’re using peach?

If you want something with more oomph then our Rosé Bowler with Rosé and strawberries as well as dry white wine and a touch of Cognac would be stunning with any red fruits on your pancakes.

Sweet Wines

SAUTERNES What Drinks Goes Best With Pancakes? The Three Drinkers

If your pancakes aren’t too sweet, then a sweet sparkling wine or dessert wine could be the way to go for tonnes of flavour without the sweetness overkill.

Toppings like cinnamon and apple would pair nicely with Sauternes, or even a Tokaji if you can get it. You can generally expect notes of apricot, honey, butterscotch, peaches, toasted baking spices with enough fresh acidity to slice through the pancakes.

Moscato D’Asti What Drinks Goes Best With Pancakes? The Three Drinkers

You could also consider a sweeter sparkling wine unless you’re using lemon on your pancakes. Something like this Moscato D’Asti brings a pastries and cream cake profile as well as a thirst-quenching fruity quality.

Size: 750ml
ABV: 5.3%

Rosé

Mirabeau La Folie Rosé What Drinks Goes Best With Pancakes? The Three Drinkers

A good sparkling Rosé sits ideally next to any strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries on your pancakes. Anything heavier or stodgier than that and we’d avoid it but for lighter toppings this works wonders.

The mirroring of fruits is subtle enough to enhance but not spoil, so look for a dry, natural tasting elegant Rosé that holds with great fizz. We’ve listed some of our favourites here, but the Mirabeau La Folie Rosé is perfectly dry, refreshing, crisp and versatile too!

Size: 750ml
ABV: 11.5%

Whites

Definition Mosel.

Now, sweet toppings are by far and away the most popular but let’s not forget savoury options.

Rich toppings like cheese and ham pancakes call for a crisp white that’s highly aromatic with good acidity. Think off-dry Riseling, Pinot Blanc or Gavi, but many others would work well!

Mushroom and Spinach is another unusual but not unheard of pancake filling, and those umami flavours are pesky to pair with. Nonetheless, a Gewürztraminer’s slight sweetness and intense aroma would be the perfect foil for the earthy savoury flavours.

For a reliable all-rounder regardless of specific toppings, if you’re serving savoury pancakes we suggest Riesling, such as Definition Mosel.

Size: 750ml

WHISKY

Old Fashioned

Old Fashioned What Drinks Goes Best With Pancakes? The Three Drinkers

Pancakes on the savoury side, especially if there are crispy strips of bacon involved, will go nicely with an Old Fashioned. There’s just something about the ridiculously decadent combination of subtle vanilla, the warmth of bitters, those smoky notes and the bacon that makes this an absolute indulgence – exactly what Pancake Day is about.

You can find the traditional Old Fashioned recipe here, as well as other variations that may strike you as a suitable dance partner for your pancakes – the Maple Old Fashioned is definitely worth a go.

CIDER

CIDER Black Fox What Drinks Goes Best With Pancakes? The Three Drinkers

There’s a tradition in France to enjoy Crêpes and cider together, particularly with savoury options so if you want to do as the French do then give it a go. Also, if you happen to be making them, Breton-style buckwheat pancakes are a particularly good match for dry ciders.

The sweeter ciders using tropical fruits or berries would probably be too much for whatever topping you have, but any dry pear or apple-fleshy style with an easy-going sweetness and enough acidity will refresh the palate in-between bites.

Best Bargain Tequilas

El Sueño Tequila Silver

El Sueño Tequila Silver THE BEST TEQUILA FOR A MARGARITA The Three Drinkers

The result of five generations of tequila producers, this is a really top cocktail tequila. Don’t be put off by the fact it’s a ‘mixto’ (not 100% agave), this beats many ‘purer’ brands hands down. After the 70% agave, 30% is locally grown sustainable piloncillo which provides a nice sweetness. The vegetal agave note is expectedly subtle with lovely grapefruit hints and overall, El Sueño represents top-notch value in a Margarita.

Tapatio Blanco Tequila

Tapatio Blanco Tequila THE BEST TEQUILA FOR A MARGARITA The Three Drinkers

Tapatio is much loved among tequila drinkers because it’s largely unchanged since the 1930s, and for a silver tequila it’s the gold standard for value. Made traditionally, it’s brimming with blanco character; think raw agave, a little citrus, earthiness, and pepper. It’s intense so will more than hold its own in a Margarita. Iconic.

El Espolòn Blanco Tequila

El Espolòn Blanco Tequila THE BEST TEQUILA FOR A MARGARITA The Three Drinkers

Cirilo Oropeza is a hugely respected distiller producing fantastic tequila in the Jalisco highlands and you’ll often see this bottle used by mixologists. The pure agave goes straight to bottling without aging, retaining fresh agave up front and centre, supported by a pleasant sweetness and floral undertone. We’ve praised their bottle before but it’s a Day of the Dead skeleton riding rooster so we have to point it out again. Now that’s a bottle you want to see coming out for the Margaritas.

The Butterfly Cannon Blue

The Butterfly Cannon Blue THE BEST TEQUILA FOR A MARGARITA The Three Drinkers

As if the beautifully designed bottle isn’t enough to win you over, the aesthetics carry over to the liquid itself with the vivid blue hue changing colour once mixed! If that’s still not convinced you, then every purchase also supports butterfly conservation! Still no?! Prickly pears and clementines support punchy agave flavour with added complexity from strawberry, melon and fig. This is a tequila that has so much going for it and is simply stunning in a Margarita.

This super smooth Blanco uses 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the volcanic soil of the Jalisco highlands. There’s a sharpness to this Blanco that really stands out and makes for an intense Margarita. Top-notch for the price.

1800 Silver Tequila

1800 Silver Tequila THE BEST TEQUILA FOR A MARGARITA The Three Drinkers

The eye-catching bottle based off the Mayan pyramids puts a lot of pressure on the liquid inside, and it lives up to it. Double distilled and blended with an array of white tequilas, the result is a seriously well-rounded profile that is delicate, floral, fruity and herbal and all whilst being refreshing and silky smooth. It’s exceptional and between you and me, tequila lovers would probably pay more for the quality but let’s not tell 1800 that! It brings so much depth of flavour to a Margarita..

Top end

VIVIR Tequila Reposado

VIVIR Tequila Reposado THE BEST TEQUILA FOR A MARGARITA The Three Drinkers

Vivir roughly translates as, ‘to live’ from Spanish and if you’re lucky enough to use this in your Margarita then you are well and truly living your best life. It’s a gorgeous bottle of buttery and caramelly reposado from the 6 months of bourbon oak cask aging. There’s a really lovely vanilla hint too, but don’t think that all of this overpowers the agave – that remains front and centre and anchors everything with vegetal earthiness. A benchmark premium reposado that will transform a Margarita to a whole new level.

Size: 700ml
ABV: 40%

Código 1530 Rosa

Código 1530 Rosa THE BEST TEQUILA FOR A MARGARITA The Three Drinkers

If you’re a seasoned Margarita drinker then you might want to mix it up a little bit. If this is the case, this is the tequila for you. Bright berry notes shine through due to aging in ex-Napa Cabernet wine barrels which works amazingly well with the smooth and earthy tequila. It looks and tastes incredible and will make you a floral pink-hue Margarita, unlike anything you’ve tried before.

Size: UK 700ml / US 750ml
ABV: 35%
Find here: UK £46.24 / US $60.99

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s/Galentine's Day

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers

If you can’t have a cocktail on Galentine’s and Valentine’s Day then when can you really? No matter whether you’re impressing your date, want to dish out something special to your gals or just to treat yourself, these beautiful cocktails make the best company.

Whatever your tipple of choice, there’s a cocktail that you’ll fall in love with waiting below!

Raspberry Daiquiri – for the rum lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Raspberry Daiquiri – for the rum lovers

Daiquiri is often dismissed as a slush-puppy style cocktail that’s overly sweet, but not this. It’s stunningly simple and when made correctly, it absolutely hits the spot. The raspberry and lime add a nice fruity tang to the syrup that works harmoniously with the rum for a seriously moreish cocktail.

Ingredients
50ml rum (white ideally, e.g., Havana Club 3YO)
30ml raspberry-lime syrup (try Monin)
10ml lime juice
Raspberry stick (garnish)

Method
Heat sugar and water in equal parts and throw in some raspberries and a squeeze of lime – to your preference. Once cooled, shake this and the remaining ingredients until cold and strain twice! Delicious.

Chocolate Martini – for the vodka lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Chocolate Martini – for the vodka lovers

If you’ve forgotten the chocolate box on Valentine’s, then don’t worry because this is even better. Deliciously sweet and silky smooth, the Chocolate Martini verges on dessert territory so it’s as indulgent as cocktails get – perfect for Valentine’s!

Ingredients

50ml vodka
25ml Irish Cream liqueur
30ml chocolate liqueur (like Godiva)
1 tbsp of melted chocolate
A sprinkling of cocoa powder

Method
You can drizzle the melted chocolate in a spiral or use a pastry brush to paint chocolate streaks along the glass. Save a little for the rim (or use the liqueur) and roll the glass in cocoa powder before chilling. Shake everything else with a generous handful of ice until it feels extremely chilled, then strain it into the glasses! Top Tip: If you half a strawberry lengthways then it’s the perfect natural heart garnish!

Tequila Mockingbird – for the tequila lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Tequila Mockingbird – for the tequila lovers

Much more than a pun, this is a gorgeous cocktail that varies across the world. Watermelon is underused in mixology because it lacks flavour when used sparingly, or it dilutes the drink too much. However, when combined as ice cubes it’s sublime and too good for just summertime. The jalapeño adds some spice to your Valentine’s Day too in this juicy, sweet and pleasantly earthy mix.

Ingredients
50ml blanco tequila
15ml lime juice
15ml agave syrup
3 watermelon cubes
1 slice jalapeño

Method
You can plop the watermelon ice cubes in (literally frozen cubes of watermelon), or to get more flavour muddle them and jalapeño in the bottom of the cocktail shaker. Add the other ingredients and fill with ice. Shake vigorously until well chilled and strain twice over into a glass. Use a good tequila!!

Blinker – for the whiskey lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Blinker – for the whiskey lovers

Unfairly overlooked for a Valentine’s cocktail, we can’t leave whisky out and this Blinker is so simple and elegant that it’s easy to love. In the same vein as a classic Whiskey Sour, grenadine was originally used as a sweetener, but we prefer raspberry syrup!

Ingredients
50ml rye whiskey
50ml grapefruit juice (any colour)
15ml raspberry syrup/grenadine
Raspberries (garnish)

Method
Heat and stir demerara sugar and water in a 1:1 ratio and add a handful of raspberries to form a pulp before straining and allowing to cool. That’s the hard bit done, now you just shake with ice, strain and serve! Skewered raspberries make for a special final touch.

Pink Gimlet – for the gin lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers Pink Gimlet – for the gin lovers

This is a gorgeous tangy Gimlet with added fruity sweetness from the use of pink gin. The grapefruit and lime accentuate citrus notes in the gin and depending on the gin you use, a dash of syrup will balance things out perfectly. Especially if you use fresh juice, this will be packed with intense flavour and beguiling freshness.

Ingredients
50ml pink gin (Mirabeau Rosé Gin is perfect)
25ml syrup
50ml lime juice
75ml pink grapefruit juice
Rose petals (garnish)

Method
Simply pour all the ingredients into an ice filled cocktail shaker and shake together, then strain into a glass. Garnish with half a wheel of lime or even better, some rose petals, and you’re all set.

La Violetta – perfect for the sparkling wine lovers

The Best Cocktails to Make for Valentine’s Day The Three Drinkers La Violetta – perfect for the sparkling wine lovers

Sparkling wine screams celebration, and the La Violetta is a wonderfully versatile fizz cocktail for Valentine’s Day. You can use whatever bubbles you have, Lambrusco, Champagne, Cava, Prosecco – it all works! For your taste, just leave out or add in a dash of syrup depending on the wine you’ve gone for. The lush floral aroma of the créme de violette works so well with most gin botanicals, and with the citrus and beautiful bubbles it's so refreshing too.

Ingredients
30ml dry gin
15ml lemon juice
15ml créme de violette
30ml sparkling wine
Tbsp of syrup (optional)

Method
Wine aside, shake everything and double strain into your glass. Top up with fizz and stir gently! Voilá!

That’s cocktails locked down, but if you have your eye on the spirits and wines to go in them or just fancy something simpler, then check out the rest of our Valentine’s Guides! There are the Best Sprits and Best Sparking Wine and Best Pink Gin here.

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

Valentine’s day is all about love and couples so I’ve put together pairs of spirits I love from each of the main spirits categories. These are not, one for him or her, as I don’t believe in imposing flavour on anyone. These are simply pairs of the best examples of spirits I’ve tasted recently, and if you needed to replace your other halves favourite spirit in time for Valentine’s Day, then I don’t think you’d go wrong with any of these.

The Best Tequila For Valentine’s Day

Mijenta Blanco

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Mijenta Blanco the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

There is tequila I used to drink in my youth, mainly with salt and lemon, late in a bar whilst in Edinburgh at university, and this is about as far removed from that style of Tequila as you can get. It is elegant and vibrant with fruity flavours and delicate agave notes running all the way through the palate. Made from 100% Blue Weber agave and bottled with no filtration, Mijenta supports whale conservation and partners with The Ocean Foundation. They also use local glass, and the labels are created using agave waste. There is a feel-good factor to this lovely tequila, just as it makes you feel good whilst drinking it.

Volcan De Mi Tierra Blanco

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Volcan De Mi Tierra Blanco Tequila the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

Created with a blend of Blue Agave from both the highlands and lowland of Jalisco, the agave is grown in the shadow of the volcano, hence the name. The volcano erupted over 200,000 years ago and created rich volcanic soils which are perfect for growing agave. This Tequila has lots of complexity and is great for sipping, using in a Paloma, and it makes a mean Margarita as well.

The Best Gin For Valentine’s Day

Mermaid Pink Gin

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Mermaid Pink Gin the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

This pink gin is unlike many others. It is vibrant and not too sweet. It still has the Mermaid Gin at its heart, and the fruity extra flavour comes from an infusion of strawberries grown on the Isle of Wight, where this distillery is found. The strawberries mix well with the original botanicals, and it makes a brilliant G&T, especially if topped with strawberries! The pink hew is just enough to let you know this is a pink gin and therefore to expect lots of fruitiness.

Kyrö Pink Gin

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Kyrö Pink Gin the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

Made in Finland, the team at Kyro has attempted to make a pink gin for everyone. Well, I’m not sure about that, all I do know is that this is my favourite pink gin ever! If it’s others as well, then that just goes to show they’ve been pretty successful. Made with foraged strawberries, rhubarb and lingonberries, there is a creaminess to the gin, and it tastes very fresh and not artificial at all. I’m sure this would be great in cocktails, but above all, it makes a very refreshing G&T.

The Best Vodka For Valentine’s Day

Dima’s Vodka Ukrainian Three Grain

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Dima’s Vodka Ukrainian Three Grain the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

This vodka not only tastes brilliant but is doing something to put right some of the wrong in the world. £5 from every sale gets donated to Ukraine to help the war effort. Back to the vodka, it’s made from three grains giving a lovely depth of fruity earthy flavours and is brilliant chilled a little with a little pickle - just how it’s drunk in its home country. It also makes excellent cocktails, not just in flavour, but the vodka has a creamy mouthfeel which helps everything slip down nicely. As they say in Ukraine: Budmo!

X Muse

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day X Muse Vodka the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

Made in Scotland from a blend of two heritage varieties of barley, Maris Otter and Plumage Archer, this vodka has huge complexity of flavour and great texture. X Muse, pronounced Tenth Muse, reflects the sum of its parts, blended together as the tenth muse was a sum of all other nine in mythology. Not just an interesting story, it’s one of the best vodkas I’ve tasted in recent times.

The Best Whisky For Valentine’s Day

Glen Moray Port Finish

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Glen Moray Port Finish Whisky the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

Glen Moray creates the best value single malt whisky by far, and this expression is no different. This port finish is part of the Glen Moray Classic range and has had an eight-month finish in a port cask. This not only gives delicate red fruit flavours alongside those classic orchard fruits and honey, but a slightly pink tinge. Well, it is Valentine’s day.

GlenAllachie 11

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Glenallachie 11 Whisky the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

GlenAllachie is becoming known for its use of different oak finishes and maturations, and here we have a whisky first matured in American ex-bourbon casks for nine years, and then finished in ruby port casks. There are lots of caramel, honey, and vanilla notes, but also red berries and some hedgerow fruit as well. There is a rich hew of pink, and this whisky goes to show that as long as the casks are good, single malt doesn’t have to be old to be very good.

The Best Brandy/Cognac For Valentine’s Day

Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal Cognac the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

Back in 1738 it was illegal to plant new vines on your land, until Louis XV gave permission to Rémy Martin. This was the Accord Royal of 1738 of which this cognac gets its name. There are lots of complex citrus fruits, with orange being predominant, and caramel and a touch of spice. Smooth and very easy to sip on a winter’s evening, it also makes a good long cocktail too. Add a little ginger ale, a dash of lime and a sprig of rosemary, and all you’ll need is the sun to top it off.

Hennessy XO

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Hennessy XO Cognac the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

This is the Cognac that started the XO movement. The name was given to the Cognac by Maurice Hennessy in the 1800s. First bottled for friends and family in 1870, it uses a blend of more than 100 eaux-de-vie from Petite and Grand Champagne regions of Cognac as well as Fins Bois and Borderies. It is a deep brooding cognac with lots of dark chocolate and orange flavours. Perfect with a cigar, but as I found out on my last visit to Hennessy, brilliant in the heat of the day in a fishbowl glass and plenty of ice. Magnificent.

The Best Rum For Valentine’s Day

Ron Abuelo XII Two Oaks

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Ron Abuelo XII Two Oaks the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

Matured in two different types of oak cask, this rum from Panama is rich and smoky, but has a sweetness running through the whole palate making it smooth and deeply drinkable. Aged for over a decade in ex-bourbon casks, it was then transferred into heavily charred virgin American oak giving the rum its smoky deep character.

Duppy Share 40%

The Best Spirits for Valentine’s Day Duppy Share 40% Rum the three drinkers thethreedrinkers.com

This rum is created from blends of Jamaican and Barbadian rums. The former gives lots of fruity flavours and the caramel, baked banana flavours are typical of Barbados. The rums are up to five years old and the resulting rum is smooth with lots of tropical sweetness working well by itself or in any rum cocktail, especially a daiquiri. The name is taken from the Jamaican spirits called Duppies which stole rum across the Caribbean.

The Best Gastropubs in the UK 2023

The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

The Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs of 2023 has been assembled for another year to answer the question, ‘what is the best gastropub in the UK?’, so who has been crowned?

More than 100 industry professionals had the job of judging the finest gastropub’s offerings and whittled it down to these 10 as the very best so without further ado, let’s enter gastropub heaven.

10. The Red Lion and Sun, London

The Red Lion and Sun, London The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

There’s been a pub on this site in leafy Highgate Village since the 16th century, but with it securing another Top 10 placing, it’s safe to say it’s probably never been this good. Just as delightful warming by the log burner inside or in the beautiful garden, The Red Lion and Sun is famous for its extensive wine list (it’s seriously long!) and in terms of food, producers are carefully selected with fresh ingredients rotated in a menu changing everyday offering, ‘rustic, modern British pub food’. In particular, tables for the Sunday Roast are like gold dust but it’s well worth persisting.

9. The Fordwich Arms, Kent

The Fordwich Arms, Kent The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

They say the best things come in small packages, and inside England’s smallest town of Fordwich is The Michelin-starred Fordwich Arms. The gorgeous red brick-green ivy combination overlooks the River Stour in Kent, and The Observer’s Young Chef of the Year 2016 presides over local Kentish ingredients in the kitchen. There is a choice of tasting menus including vegetarian and each with an optional wine pairing to top it all off.  On a sunny day by the river, the terrace seating here really is some of the most beautiful in the country.

8. The Hand & Flowers, Marlow

The Hand & Flowers, Marlow The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

This is the only pub in the UK to earn two Michelin stars, a feat never achieved before. With Tom Kerridge at the helm, this rustic whitewashed pub hosts a culinary spectacle that attracts people from all over to try dishes like duck liver parfait with orange chutney and toasted brioche and the signature chocolate and ale cake. Once guests have finished all that, they can also stay at one of the many luxurious cottages owned by the pub that include a hearty breakfast come morning.

7. The White Swan, Fence

The White Swan, Fence The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

Somewhat unassuming from the outside, The White Swan in Lancashire is much more than the typical villager boozer it imitates. Tom Parker’s skills in the kitchen were rewarded with winning the 2019’s Great British Pub Awards Chef of the Year and a Michelin star, given for a rotation of themed nights and specials such as lobster soup and Whitewell partridge with smoked bacon. In the past, two courses have cost £30 and three for £40 but with an influx of praise and planned renovations, it’s a safe bet that this may be going up.

6. The Angel, Hetton

The Angel, Hetton The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

Nestled in the sublime North Yorkshire Dales, The Angel has claims of being the UK’s original gastropub, with drink and dining origins dating back to the 15th century. The reimagined pub food like Loire valley rabbit loin, monkfish, quail, venison, and Tahitian Vanilla cheesecake won a Michelin star after Michael Wignall’s takeover, and he also happens to have won the 2022 Chef of the Year... so you’re in safe hands.

5. The Kentish Hare, Tunbridge Wells

The Kentish Hare, Tunbridge Wells The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

Brothers Chris and James Tanner saved the pub from being demolished for flats and after serious TLC, it launched in 2014 and is now adored for its modern British cuisine using mostly local fresh ingredients. In one half of the pub, you’ll find dishes like goat’s curd with beetroot, walnut and clementine being served, but the other has been retained as a stylish bar space to maintain the community feel – a true gastropub.

4. The Sportsman, Seasalter

The Sportsman, Seasalter The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

Overlooking the Kent coast, The Sportsman has been a stalwart of the Top 50 Gastropubs list for years now, with chef-patron Stephen Harris laser-focused on the menu reflecting the surroundings. From making his own salt from the neighbouring sea to using meat from Seasalter farms around the corner, almost everything is sourced from the land surrounding the pub. If you’re lucky enough to get a table, the highlight of the five-course is the slip sole grilled in seaweed butter... using seaweed picked from the adjoining beach of course.

3. Freemasons, Wiswell

Freemasons, Wiswell The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

In 3rd place is yet another one of Lancashire’s stunning gastropubs and that’s Freemasons in the charming Ribble Valley. Alongside an array of experimental dishes merging local and world flavours like roast loin and kofta of lamb with BBQ lettuce, miso aubergine and mint yoghurt, the pub offers four guest rooms and a unique Chef’s Table that sits at the heart of the kitchen action. With a husband-and-wife duo covering both the kitchen and front-of-house in award-winning fashion, this is very much still a pub, just a spectacular one.

2. The Unruly Pig, Woodbridge

The Unruly Pig, Woodbridge The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

This year’s runner-up is last year’s winner and also 2023’s host, a 16th-century inn with all the crooked ceilings, log burners and beams you expect, not to mention the lush greenery outside. Alongside over 60 wines and a range of mouthwatering craft beers, home-made cordials and local fruit juices, dishes are a curious ‘Britalian’ blend, mixing it up from traditional pub cuisine. Expect offerings like celeriac and mushroom lasagna, halibut with avruga caviar sauce & seaweed potatoes, and the trademark unruly chocolate tiramisu. The achievements of Owner Brendan Padfield are amplified by the fact that a fire destroyed parts of the building just 12 weeks after opening, but since then it’s truly been onwards and upwards!

1. Parkers Arms, Clitheroe

Parkers Arms, Clitheroe The Top 10 UK Gastropubs of 2023 The Three Drinkers

Swapping from 2nd to 1st is the historical rural inn Parkers Arms. It’s difficult to stand out in an Area of Outstanding National Beauty but with blow-away modern British classics on chef-patron Stosie Madi’s menu, they’ve managed it. With enchanting rolling hills within view, you can expect super flavoursome dishes that fill you up – no ‘gels and foams’. Apart from things like spices and chocolate, if it doesn’t grow within 30 miles it isn’t on the menu. Madi says, ‘The Parkers Arms is a country pub that welcomes everyone and their dog’ like a proper gastropub should. To complete the package, there are also alluring rooms available. Delicious local food, beautiful surroundings, extensive wine and ale lists, a dog-friendly bar and somewhere to rest your head too – idyllic.
