Vodka, a spirit born in Russia but now adored across the world with new distilleries popping up every week, its price and quality can both vary massively, so it’s handy to keep on top of the latest and greatest drinks. What better time to do that than after the Vodka Masters Awards 2022, we ask?! Well, luckily, you can chill because we’ve done the hard work for you. Count Pushkin has been making waves in South Africa for a while now, and it’s finally been awarded praise on the International stage too, picking up a Gold at the 2022 Vodka Masters. It was first bottled in 1965 but has been tweaked ever since and seems to have reached its pinnacle! The only downside is that it doesn’t appear to be available outside of South Africa just yet. After this award win though, watch this space!

A stalwart of the supermarket shelves, Absolut Blue’s design inspired by an 18th century medicine bottle still catches the eye, and now it’s what’s inside that’s being praised too. Rewarded for its ‘texture and minerality’, it achieved a Gold prize at the Vodka Masters. It’s great value and ideal for a no-nonsense cocktail base, or even neat with ice and lime. Cheers!

Tamova Quadruple Distilled

This is a stunning coup for Aldi Australia whose Tamova Vodka came out on top of 139 competitors, earning a prestigious Masters Award. Part of the everyday range but with a quality you definitely don’t find every day, this velvet smooth spirit is simply perfect in your Cosmos or Bloody Marys. Right now, the four times distilled version is only on shelves down under, so we have a short wait to try it. In the meantime, the triple distilled Tamova is also well worth a try.

Black Cow

Black Cow Vodka

This is a rather unusual vodka that has been on everyone’s lips in more ways than one. It’s created on a West Dorset dairy farm and claims to be the world’s first pure milk vodka. The whey left over from the farm’s cheddar (also top notch by the way) isn’t wasted, and instead goes into Black Cow. Unsurprisingly this creates a subtle creamy note and as a result, it is amazing at the heart of an Espresso Martini, but it is flavoursome enough to enjoy neat too.

Sharing the top award with Black Cow is Romania’s finest, Stalinskaya Gold. Using pure water from 170 metres below ground, this mineral rich and finely filtered vodka has a surprisingly creamy finish and will no doubt be available elsewhere very soon. We can’t wait to try it!

50 Years of Whisky Making History: Billy Walker’s Favourite Bottles from the GlenAllachie Range

We recently had the greatest pleasure of talking to one of the legends of the whisky industry, Billy Walker. Billy has been in the Scotch Whisky industry for 50 years and throughout his time in it has gained many awards including Master Distiller/Blender of the Year at the World Whisky Awards as well as being inducted into Whisky Magazine’s Hall of Fame in 2020!

Billy grew up in the whisky town of Dumbarton and having developed an interest in making whisky at a young age he went to The University of Glasgow and studied Chemistry gaining a BSc Honours Degree in 1967. It is this chemistry background that Billy has always said stood him in great stead along his whisky making career, and his advice to anyone wanting to make whisky is that having a background in chemistry would be very useful.

Billy’s huge enthusiasm for whisky was evident when he told us “The blending side of the business is unquestionably the most exciting part for me. It encompasses looking at what you have at the start of the journey and using experience to decide what needs to happen to a whisky to get it into that sweet spot such as which casks to place it in, or which casks to finish it in. That’s the most enjoyable side of the business for me”.

As for his favourite thing about the industry, he replied, “There is one thing I will say about this industry, and it may not be my favourite thing, but it is important. While we are competition (for each other), we are friendly competition, we will help each other out. There is no great envy or secrecy about who we are and what we are doing, and we will help each other out in certain circumstances which perhaps wouldn’t happen in other industries”.

‘The single cask range is always good to look out for, but in the near future, a very nice release with a mizunara cask twist is coming. That would be a good call. Also, If you were lucky enough to be in the visitor centre in the last few weeks, there was a sherry cask release which was transferred into a peated cask which was delicious.’

‘I’ve done quite a few of these, I have to say, and we’re continuing to do a lot of interesting work with wine casks. It’s a tough choice, but it would be between a Sauternes cask release and a Grattamacco cask release. It’s hard to choose between the two but the Sauternes release has lots of sweet fresh fruits and is wonderfully well balanced.’

What is the Best Virgin Oak Whisky?

The GlenAllachie 10 Year Old Chinquapin virgin oak finish

‘We have used many virgin oak casks. We’ve looked at Ozark, Chinquapin, Japanese Mizunara, French, Spanish and Scottish oak. My initial favourite was Chinquapin, which as well as the usual notes of honey, vanilla and butterscotch has a hint of anise and liquorice in the background. But the one that I really love is the Scottish Virgin Oak. Some was bottled quite recently but it is hard to get your hands on. The wood is difficult to work with, the coopers hate working with it because it is complicated and has lots of knots but once the whisky is in it and it has been given two to three years it’s terrific.’

Ingredients:
60ml white rum
60ml coconut cream
120ml crushed pineapple/pineapple juice
Garnish: pineapple Wedge

Method: The blender is coming out for this one. Combine 60ml of your favourite white rum, with the same amount of coconut cream. Add 120ml of pineapple juice or crushed pineapple, a handful of ice, and blend. A wedge of pineapple for the garnish and you’re there. Umbrella optional ;)

Sweet, tangy, and packing a punch, we love the Cosmo for its fresh and clean feel. 

Ingredients:
45ml vodka
15ml Triple Sec
30ml cranberry juice
a dash of lime
Garnish: orange zest

Method: Dust off the cocktail shaker and combine the vodka (citrus flavoured works well), triple sec, cranberry juice, a cup of ice, and a dash of lime juice for added freshness. Get your shake on, and then pour the mix into a martini glass with orange zest for the quintessential Cosmo experience!

Over 200 years old and still going strong, there is a reason the Old Fashioned is the most popular cocktail in the US today. It’s simple, dark, and delicious.

Ingredients:
40ml bourbon
2 tsp sugar syrup/1 tsp sugar
2-3 dashes of bitters
Garnish: orange slice & Maraschino cherry

Method: Take your glass and add in the sugar syrup (or sugar), a tiny splash of water, and 2 or 3 dashes of bitters depending on your preference. Stir, layer with ice, pour in your favourite bourbon whiskey over the top and garnish with orange slice and maraschino cherry for the complete cocktail. Some people like to add a little soda water too so make it how you like it best. There are no strict rules when it comes to cocktails!

Created in Italy and now Germany’s favourite, Aperol Spritz is one of the most straightforward cocktails you can make. Just 3 ingredients give you a true taste of summer. 

Ingredients:
50ml Aperol
75ml prosecco
soda water

Method: Pop a few ice cubes in your glass and combine the Aperol and prosecco. Top up with soda, stir gently to keep the fizz and then garnish with a slice of orange! Voilà! Again, you can adjust the ratios for your tastes and mood.

Synonymous with Spain and Portugal, a cold jug of sangria on a hot day is hard to beat which is why it’s the top wine-based cocktail in the world.

Ingredients (for a jug)
750ml good red wine
100ml brandy
200g berries
2 oranges
2 pears
2 lemons

Method: Chop two oranges, two pears and two lemons. Add them along with 200g of whatever red berries you like best, into a bowl and sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over them. Fill a jug with ice, your fruit, brandy and red wine. Stir, taste, and add in a little triple sec if you want it stronger, or some sparkling water for the opposite. Enjoy!

The choice of 007, and apparently millions more as the simple Martini remains as popular as ever.

Ingredients:
60ml vodka/gin
20ml vermouth
Garnish: lemon/olive

Method: Shaken or stirred? Vodka or gin? Olive or lemon? We’ll leave it down to you, but you’ll need 60ml of vodka/gin, 20ml of dry vermouth, ice, and olives or lemon to finish. Top Tip: Make sure to pop your martini glass in the freezer/fill it with ice to chill it right down before you use it. Did you know you can put your vodka/gin in the freezer to cool it right down too?

4. CAIPIRINHA

Originally based on a remedy to cure Spanish flu (yep!), this national drink of Brazil has only 3 ingredients and highlights the distinct taste of cachaça, a spirit made from sugarcane. It’s totally refreshing and delicious.

Ingredients:
50ml cachaça
juice from 1/2 lime
1 tsp sugar

Method: Crush half a lime and mix with the sugar to dissolve it. Add the cachaça and ice and stir. That’s it – ridiculously straightforward!

A modern-day classic, this sweet and sour cocktail has become the UK’s favourite. Its evocative name may have helped spread the word, but it’s the iconic taste that makes it one of the best.

Ingredients:
30ml vanilla vodka
15ml Passoa
2 tsp lime juice
seeds from 1 passion fruit
50ml prosecco

Method: There’s a tad more work to do for this cocktail but trust us, it’s worth it. Scoop the seeds from a passion fruit into your cocktail shaker and add the vanilla vodka (if you only have plain vodka, use a little vanilla syrup). Add a handful of ice, Passoa and the lime juice and shake well. Strain into a martini glass and add a passion fruit slice on top. But we’re not done there. A 50ml Prosecco shot is often served in accompaniment, so you can have two drinks in one cocktail!

Narrowly missing out on the top spot, but loved most in France, Italy and Portugal is the iconic Mojito. It’s rum, mint, and lime – the ultimate refresher.

Ingredients:
50ml white rum
juice of 1 lime
1 tsp sugar/ 15ml sugar syrup
a handful of mint leaves
soda water
Garnish: mint

Method: Crush a handful of mint leaves with the lime juice and sugar. Add ice and a white rum that you love. Top up with soda water to a level you enjoy, gently stir to combine, garnish with mint and sip away! Top Tip: When preparing a mojito always crush the mint leaves as opposed to dicing to unlock oils that will assist with enhancing the minty flavour.

So, here it is. The world’s favourite cocktail at the moment– the Margarita. Easy to make, simple to adapt and perfect for any occasion. Salty, sweet, bitter, and sour, the Margarita triggers four of the five possible human tastes, so there’s actually some science behind its popularity too.

Ingredients:
50ml tequila
25ml fresh lime juice
20ml triple sec
a dash of syrup (optional)
Garnish: lime wheel, salt rim (optional)

Method: Shake the tequila, lime juice, triple sec and ice together until the shaker is cool to touch. You can add a dash of syrup also if you like it sweet. Strain the ingredients into a small glass and garnish with an appetising lime wheel and a salt rim if you fancy. Sit back and enjoy cocktail royalty. 

The methods above will guide you in the right direction but as with any cocktail, experiment. Add stuff in, take stuff out, change the ratios, shake it, stir it, do whatever you can think of (pretty much), and create your ultimate cocktail.

With all the talk in the whisky world being about the extremes, like heavily peated, big sherry bombs, or very old whisky, I wanted to bring the conversation back to why the majority of us like whisky, which is its fruitiness. Beyond all the extremes of flavour and age and price, there are loads of great fruity whiskies which don’t cost the earth and make for great drinking drams. Fruit is becoming centre stage again. I was recently talking to the Master Blender at Diageo’s Johnny Walker, Emma Walker, and she was saying she wanted to bring the whisky she creates to taste as the tasting notes do, so for example if the main tasting note is apples, then the consumer should be able to taste apples when drinking the whisky. Here I’ve put together a few whiskies I love because of their fruitiness.

Glenfiddich Experimental Series Orchard

This is the 5th in the experimental series from Glenfiddich and it is an unusual combination of Scotch whisky and Somerset Pomona Spirit casks from the Somerset Cider Brandy Company. This all came about during a walk around the orchards when Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich’s Malt Mast visited the Somerset Cider Brandy Company to meet their Master Distiller Matilda Temperly. The resulting whisky as well as having lovely vanilla and oaky spice has a core of crunchy ripe apples.

Benriach The Original Ten

This was part of the new core range after Brown Forman took over the distillery and Rachel Barrie became the master blender. It was created by using three different types of casks, ex-bourbon barrels giving lots of vanilla and honey, sherry casks giving some light spice and toasty oak and virgin oak casks. The combination gives lots of fruity aromas of apricot, melon and orchard fruits. The palate brings more of the creamy orchard fruits and there is a touch of smoke. The finish brings the apricots back and a little maltiness. It’s a lively fruity whisky with lots of complexity and with that little touch of smoke, the orchard fruits really sing.

Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask

Fruity flavours can come in all types with whisky, and one of my favourites is created by finishing whisky in a rum cask. This whisky began life in traditional oak casks and then was finished in Caribbean rum casks. Balvenie even went as far as asking their Malt Master David Stewart to create the blend of rums to go into the casks to season them for the whisky. The nose is very tropical with mangoes and passionfruit as well as the usual vanilla and toffee, the palate brings in apples and a little banana and the finish is very long with the fruity flavours persisting.

Tomatin 12 Year Old

Tomatin has always made a fruity style of whisky and this expression is no exception. Using both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks has created a very fruit forward style that is incredibly well balanced. There’s not much more to say about the flavour, it’s simply very good. However it does come with a great anniversary box designed by paper cut artist Emily Hogarth, so makes a great gift, and let’s hope that if you gift it they open it whilst you're there!

Glendronach Port Wood

There has been an upward trend over the last ten years of finishing whisky in Port Pipes. And with this expression from Glendronach, we have a cracker. It’s uncomplicated, very fruity, fabulously rich and the fruit content very deep. There are lots of dried fruits like raisins and dates but also tropical notes too and even darker fruits like blackberry jam. There is some drying oak on the finish, but this is mixed with back grapes and a little charred wood. A little more expensive, but well worth every penny.

Fruity whisky doesn’t have to be the domain of the Single Malts, there are many types of blended whisky, but Johnny Walker is known for its fruity style with a wisp of smoke. I think the best way to be able to delve into the world of Johnny Walker is to try the entire core range. And with this set, you can do just that without breaking the bank. It contains 12 50ml miniature bottles, 2 for each expression, spanning the Johnnie Walker range: Red Label, Black Label, 12 year old Double Black, Gold Label Reserve, 18 Year Old and Blue Label. Franklin and Sons Tonic Water

We’re putting Grand Marnier to the test this week. Grand Marnier is an orange liqueur made in the heart of cognac and is more commonly mixed into cocktails than drunk mixed with tonics. We’ve chosen to mix our Grand Marnier with Franklin & Sons Rosemary and Black Olive tonic water and Franklin & Sons Mallorcan tonic water.

The Mallorcan tonic water has a smell reminiscent of an orange spritz! It is lovely and fresh, not too sweet and when mixed with the Grand Marnier a natural breeze of fresh orange marmalade hits you with a refreshing burst of tonic at the end. It’s like summer in a glass!
