Boschendal Sauvignon Blanc

Boschendal do some great work with conservation and biodiversity which is always a bonus when picking wines, but what’s inside has to be quality stuff too and this is. The cooler coastal vineyards bring expressive freshness to the lemon and lime citrus, but you also get the full range of Sauvignon notes with grapefruit tang, subtle nectarine, and tropical pineapple. Vanilla and a crack of warm pepper fill things out in this loveable glugger.

Barossa Ink Shiraz

This fresh and fruit forward Shiraz pulls grapes from all over the Barossa region to punch with maximum intensity. It’s crying out for a steak pairing, but this is one that needs to breathe for a couple of hours before enjoying.

They’re low yield grapes which put many producers off, but what is bottled is special and tastes a hell of a lot more expensive than it is – especially with the discount.

Chateau Tanunda Shiraz

Alaina Rosé Laurent Miquel

Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault combine for this Languedoc Rosé, named after the winemaker’s daughter. It’s so summery, refreshing and elegant, and alive with crisp fruits and floral notes. The strawberry brings some richness but overall this is a light Rosé with good citric acidity and would be a dream pairing for many dishes.

Le Bijou Rosé de Sophie Valrose Coteaux de Béziers

This gem was on offer a few months ago so it’s great to see it back (even though it’s easily worth picking up at full price). Inspired by legendary Sophie Valrose who did great work supporting women vineyard workers, it’s a signature dry and crisp French Rosé from Languedoc. Strawberries and cream are lifted by subtle but vibrant lemon and enforced by steely minerality. Should cost more really (shh!)

There’re also some herbaceous green hints going on too. Really interesting wine.

This is a fantastic supermarket pickup. It makes great use of grapes from across the whole Barossa area to get the most intense and sophisticated flavours. Oak ageing delivers mocha notes and brooding, rich blackberries and plums. One thing we’ve noticed with this is that giving it an hour to breathe really lets it sing that extra note. Serve with steak or hearty meats and enjoy.

Roodeberg Black

Morrisons had this South African red on offer a while ago, and we’re glad to see it back under a tenna… even though it’s worth more. It’s a red blend starring mostly Pinotage, a grape that’s undergone a great revival in South Africa. Packed with dark fruits, there’s also a slight char to the oak that works a treat. Rich with good structure, this is an easy-drinking gem perfect for meat dishes.

Lindemans Gentlemans Collection Cabernet Sauvignon

Henry J Lindeman moved from England to the Hunter Valley in Australia in 1843, when he opened his own winery to bring refined wines to the colony. Purple hues amongst a bright red colour and violet aromas welcome you in, before a black fruit flood. Chocolate and oak round things off nicely, and overall, this has the feel of a much more expensive Napa wine.

Summer Road Old Vine Grenache

This Aussie red makes magical use of old Grenache vines, extracting incredible flavour and complexity from those deep roots. There are also fewer grapes, so everything goes into the small yield. Berries star on a subtle nose, but the first sip is where this comes alive. Red fruits are everywhere, with precise acidity, fruity sweetness, and a slight waft of smoke. It’s fantastically well-rounded, and the intense booze is integrated very softly… so be careful not to overdo it, which is easy when it’s this tasty.

Over to the Awatere Valley in New Zealand now for this Sauvignon Blanc, which is as beautiful as the butterflies that flit amongst the coastal vines there. Tropical hints come to the fore here. Codorniu Seleccion Familia Reserva Organic Cava

This is a welcome addition to Waitrose’s fizz offering, and is another reliable wine by the Codorniu label. Chardonnay grapes make up half the liquid, with Spanish Macabeo and Xarel-lo from hot Penedés sharing the rest. It’s exceptional value, with nutty, toasty notes coming through from 18 months on lees. The creamy, softness to the orchard fruits is to die for too.
