One Drink, Three Ways: Cutty Sark Prohibition Whisky

Cutty Sark is an iconic whisky, from the stand-out yellow label (which was actually a printing error that’s stuck), to its Prohibition roots. Dreamt up in London in the 20s, it captured hearts over the Atlantic where speakeasy cocktails thrived and once it actually became legal, its popularity sky rocketed.

Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition was released in 2013 as an ode to these origins, and Captain Bill McCoy (AKA The Real McCoy), who shipped it nearly a century before. It’s a small batch blend of the finest single malts and quality grain whiskies, using carefully chosen American Sherry oak casks. At 50%, it packs a bigger punch than the original, with the signature vanilla and spice coming through as well as crushed nuts, dark chocolate and caramel, before a stunningly smooth finish.

Pear Cooler

Ingredients:
50ml Cutty Sark Prohibition
20ml fresh lemon juice
20ml ginger syrup
1tsp honey
ginger ale
pear slices

The Prohibition Pear Cooler marries the whisky spice with beautiful ginger syrup for sweetness, and ginger ale for refreshment. Silky honey brings its own aromatic sweetness and texture, and the lemon cuts through nicely before a hit of fresh pear. Method: Muddle the pear, lemon, honey and ginger syrup, and add in your Prohibition. Strain it well (that’s important), before topping up with ginger ale, and a leftover pear slice. Cheers!

One Drink, Three Ways: Coole Swan Irish Cream

From rums and whiskies to gins and wine styles, The Three help you get the most out of your glass. It’s time to get liquid on lips.

coole swan article

Last year, we saw an explosion of Baileys-a-like cream liqueurs but none of them had the class and finesse of this white Irish cream by Coole Swan. Named after an epic romantic poem by W.B. Yeats entitled ‘Wild Swans at Coole’, this modern version of an Irish cream took 231 attempts to get right.

Made with fine, white Belgian chocolate, Irish cream and Irish whiskey in Country Cavan, Ireland, You can totally sip this chilled alone but to change things up occasionally, here are three wonderfully different ways to serve it.

Nine & Fifty

Nine and fifty coole swan cocktail

Nine & Fifty

25ml Coole Swan Irish Cream

35ml Grand Marnier orange liqueur

15ml Tequila Blanco (100% Agave)

Pinch of edible glitter (you chose the colour!)

Edible flower for garnish

Glass: Small coup

The trees are in their autumn beauty,

The woodland paths are dry,

Under the October twilight the water

Mirrors a still sky;

Upon the brimming water among the stones

Are nine-and-fifty swans.

When I first tried this cocktail using Coole Swan Irish cream liqueur and Tequila, it blew my mind. Why? Well on paper, it doesn't feel like it should work but wow, it does. A twist on Coole Swan ’s ‘Cool Blue’ recipe and named after a line in ’Wild Swans at Coole’, this cocktail blends the freshness of a Grand Margarita with the creamy, chocolatey tones of Coole Swan’s legendary white, Irish cream liqueur. I’ve added a pinch of edible glitter to add a splash of pink colour, which when combined with an edible flower, makes for a delicious drink that becomes a piece of art.

Method: Super simple to make, just add all the ingredients into a shaker with ice until combined and chilled. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with your flower. If making a few, you can also change up the colour with the glitter every time.

Mint Choc Chip Martini

Mint

Choc Chip Martini

35ml Coole Swan Irish liquer

20ml Crème de Menthe

20ml Crème de Cacao Blanc

Dark chocolate shavings

Squirty cream

Glass: Martini Glass

Mint and white chocolate is a gloriously decadent, retro mix and Coole Swan lends itself to a mint choc chip cocktail perfectly. Think of it like a drinkable After Eight! Note: if you can’t find Crème de Cacao Blanc, you can simply use 50ml of Coole Swan instead of 35ml. Also, Giffard and Monin do great Crème de Menthe.

Method: Another very simple recipe, simply combine the wet ingredients into a mixing glass with large cubes of ice and stir. Strain into a coup glass, add a squirt of cream and grate the dark chocolate over the top.

Coole Black Magic

Coole Black Magic

50ml Coole Swan Irish liqueur

25ml Spiced rum

3/4 Blackberries

Garnish: Fresh blackberries

Glass: Martini glass

For something a little darker with an elegant twist, try this spiced blackberry scented, creamy delight. Another super simple creamy cocktail that has the wow factor. And if you want to add an extra touch of magic, include a pinch of purple, edible glitter.

Method: Combine the Coole Swan, rum and blackberries into a blender and blend until as smooth as possible. Strain into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake for 30 seconds to chill. Strain agin into a vintage glass and garnish with a blackberry or two on a cocktail pin.

brown brothers muscat

Sweet wines are back in vogue as people realise that there is so much fun to be had with them! From swapping out simple syrups for them in cocktails to drinkable puddings, sipping neat or in highballs, sweeter sips are the drinks trend of this summer and beyond.

One must-try sweet wine that does everything is Brown Brothers Orange Muscat & Flora. Hailing from Victoria, Australia, this rich, golden sipper is made with the lesser known Orange Muscat grape blended with some rare Flora, all harvested late to concentrate the sugars. The result is a sweet, viscous white wine with fresh, orange blossom aromatics and notes of candied lemon peel and marmalade. At just 10% ABV, it’s incredibly versatile; you can have this alone as a drinky dessert, pair it with salty blue cheese (yum!) and even mix it into elegant cocktails. Here are three, fun ways to try the Brown Brothers Orange Muscat & Flora.

Helena’s Choice: Orange Sunset

Think of this as a much lighter, more elegant and summery version of an old fashioned with a delightfully floral kick. This works as an aperitif as well a digestif depending on the mood and is a great all rounder cocktail for everyone at your gathering. Simply build the drink in a tumbler glass by combining the whiskey with the wine, adding the bitters and ice cube, then stirring. Garnish with an orange wheel or orange peel.

Orange Sunset

50ml Orange Muscat & Flora

25ml Rye Whiskey

2 Dashes Orange bitters

Orange peel zest

Large ice - ideally with flower frozen into it

Glass: Small wine glass

Aidy’s Choice: Spiked Orange Bellini

Here’s another super simple recipe - a Bellini with a twist! Switch out your fresh pear juice for some Orange Muscat & Flora wine in a flute and top up with Extra Brut Prosecco to give your fizz a golden hue and stunningly different aroma and flavour. It’s a really beautiful, yet simple change form a classic recipe and is guaranteed to get people talking. Garnish with an orange ribbon if you’re feeling fancy.

Spiked Orange Bellini

50ml Orange Muscat & Flora

Top up with Extra Brut Prosecco

Orange and or lemon garnish

Glass: Flute

Colin’s Choice: Mango Flora Frosé

mango flroa frosé cocktail

Mango Flora Frosé

300g Frozen mango slices

150ml Orange Muscat & Flora

Edible flowers to garnish

Glass: Large, round wine glass

This frozen treat can be a light pudding in itself or it makes a great palate cleanser before or after cheese. It takes some thinking ahead though as you need to pour the wine into a freezer bag and leave it overnight, before adding it to a blender with the mango and giving it a good blitz! Serve in a coup glass or large wine glass and garnish with edible flowers of your choice to pretty it all up.

One Drink, Three Ways: Albariño Mar de Frades

One Drink, Three Ways is the signature feature by The Three Drinkers. Join us as we take one bottle or style and create a trio of phenomenal serves that you can enjoy anytime, anywhere. From rums and whiskies to gins and wine, we’ll help you get the most from your glass.

The Albariño wine grape that’s making a big splash around the world most famously hails from Rias Baixas in Galicia in northern Spain, where 90% of production is fine white wine made with it. Rias Baixas is a region characterised by a unique, damp, coastal climate where this thick-skinned white grape thrives, producing wines with lively acidity, aromatic intensity and flavours of citrus, peach and tropical stone fruit with a characteristic saline note.

One of the leading wine producers in the region is Mar de Frades with their range of beautiful Albariño wines all presented in eye-catching, blue bottles mirroring the crisp freshness of the wine and their coastal home. Founded in 1987 in D.O Rías Baixas, Mar de Frades is located in the Salnés Valley, where characteristic Atlantic breezes and granite soils give the grapes their saline, fresh, citric and mineral profile. Here are three classic styles of Rias Baixas Albariño to try made by Mar de Frades.

Classic, Crisp & Citrusy

Mar de Frades Albariño: Classic Albariño is made in a style that’s light and lemony with a peachy note, a saline core and subtly bitter finish. Super refreshing, this classic style is made in stainless steel and tasted young. It is the perfect pairing for seafood dishes or even just sipped alone as an aperitif.

Mar de Frades

Albariño

Gastronomic Albariño

Mar de Frades Finca Valiñas: More and more Albariño is being made in a gastronomic style, where oak ageing is used as well as some extended ageing on lees (the dead yeast cells) to add texture, creaminess and depth of flavour. These processes make the wines ideal for ageing longer and for pairing with richer fish dishes and white meats especially.

Mar de Frades

Finca Valiñas

Sparkling Albariño

Mar de Frades

Brut Nature, Sparkling

Mar de Frades Brut Nature: Much more rare is a sparkling Albariño, but we are starting to see them produced! These ‘espumoso’ wines are made in the traditional method like Champagne and give crisp, lemony and saline notes with elegant, yeasty complexity - perfect as an aperitif or with fish & chips.

Crazy Lassi Gin

The fusion of British Indian food is well known and widely loved, but why isn’t there a drinking equivalent? This was the question that the Singh’s pondered, and they decided to answer it themselves. Step up - Crazy Gin. Bringing together the refreshment of Indian yoghurt drink Lassi with classics from your spice drawer like turmeric, cumin, and coriander, Crazy Gin created the world’s first clear Lassi Gin. Balance it out with floral juniper and sweet pomegranate, and a fantastically unique and interesting gin was born. We’ve been wondering how Crazy Gin could breathe new life into cocktails and have listed the best ideas below. Have a try and let us know how you might build a cocktail around Lassi gin!

Helena’s Choice: Mad Negroni

I love a Negroni and because it’s so simple, it’s perfect to experiment with. The Mad Negroni is ever so slightly sweeter, fuller, and spicier and the result is totally moreish. Simply fill a mixing glass with ice, pour all the ingredients on top and stir well. Strain into rocks glass over fresh ice.

Aidy’s Choice: Crazy Gin Pina Colada

If you like piña coladas, and makin’ them more insane...

That would work better with music to be fair.

The extra flavour of the Lassi gin brings an interesting twist to this classic. The cream of the Crazy Gin works wonderfully with the coconut, and the subtle spice with the turmeric intertwines beautifully to add a whole new layer to proceedings. Fill a mixing glass with one scoop of crushed ice. No messing around with this, pour all the ingredients into a mixing glass and stir until everything is chilled. Strain over fresh ice cubes into a hurricane glass and garnish with pineapple leaves, pineapple slice, umbrella, whatever you want!

I love trying spin offs of my beloved Old Fashioned, and this quirky adaptation really works for a lighter and sweeter drink. The coconut and yoghurt flavours add an intriguing twist, filling the cocktail out. Stir all the ingredients together with ice, add a wedge of mango for complimentary garnish and enjoy on the rocks.

One Drink 3 Ways: The Three Drinkers Limited Edition Red Silkie Irish Whiskey

If you haven’t heard by now then let us be the first to inform you that we’ve made our own Irish whiskey! A collaboration with the amazing Sliabh Liag Distillers in County Donegal in Ireland, it’s a celebration of the historic, Irish whiskey style as well as our love for fine wine!

The Three Drinkers Limited Edition, Red Silkie Irish Whiskey, to give it its full name, is finished for six months in red wine barrels hailing from the iconic Clos l’Eglise in Pomerol, Bordeaux. The result is a rich and velvety whiskey with notes of dried fruit, baking spice and a whiff of smoke that is beautifully rounded out by ripe, red fruit coming from the wine casks. £1 from every bottle also goes to mental health charity My Black Dog, so if you would like to buy a bottle and want to try some well-suited serves, check out our three favourites below.

Helena’s Choice: The Muse

The sweet, honeyed flavour of the vermouth emphasises the candied orange and caramel tones in Red Silkie, and the herbal notes play off the absinthe rinse nicely too. With those gorgeous dried red fruits, gentle smoke and warm spice from the bitters entwining, this is a layered and lovable concoction that I really think brings out the best in our whiskey! Method: Chill a coupe glass with a big chunk of ice. Once cooled, rinse the glass with Absinthe and discard it. Add the remaining ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir until they are cool and combined before straining into the chilled coupe glass.

Aidy’s Choice: Maple Whiskey Sour

I love a whiskey sour, and this particular serve is such a pick-me up. Every sip is silky smooth and the ripe fruits and spices of the Red Silkie come through deliciously with the zippy lemon and sweet syrup. Method: Add all ingredients into a shaker. Dry shake them (without ice) first and then add ice and wet shake. Finally, strain them into your cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon wheel or nutmeg.

Colin’s Choice: Irish Mule

I just wanted a little ginger beer to bring out the subtle fruity spices in Red Silkie and allow it to be the unapologetic star of the show. Subtle sweetness that’s never overbearing and bubbles fizzing on the tongue make this a triumphantly delicious and invigorating sipper indeed. Method: Fill your glass to the top with ice. Pour the double measure of whiskey into it and then fill it to the top with a premium ginger beer. Stir very gently up and down to combine without killing all the bubbles.

From rums and whiskies to gins and wine styles, the three help you get the most out of your glass. It’s time to get liquid on lips.

One Drink, Three Ways: Mirabeau Gin

Mirabeau is always one of our top choices for quality and value when it comes to rosé, so when they announced their journey into juniper a couple of years ago, we had high expectations! We were not disappointed.

In this gin, there are the familiar base botanicals of juniper, citrus, orris root, angelica root and coriander, but inspired by the surroundings of the Saint Tropez estate, it’s the Riviera twist of herbs like bay, thyme and rosemary alongside the neutral grape spirit and base distillate of Mirabeau Classic Rosé that really grabs your attention. The result is a fantastically fruity and well-rounded gin with fresh citrus character that’s bursting with floral notes, rose petals and lavender. Those herbs add an extra kick at the end too for an extremely satisfying and complete drink with all the glamour of the Côte d’Azur.

There really is plenty here to enjoy neat, but with so many appealing notes, it only makes sense to get some stunning cocktails going eventually...

Helena’s Choice: Mirabeau Pink Gimlet

Mirabeau gin is perfect for a characterful, gin sour style cocktail. The lime and grapefruit play up to the citrus in the gin and are pitched perfectly against the sweet syrup. Everything tastes incredibly fresh and balanced while showing off the beautiful, fruity gin. Simply pour all the ingredients into an ice filled cocktail shaker and shake together, then strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with half a wheel of lime and that’s it. You’re transported to the French Riviera!

50ml Lime Juice (1 lime)

75ml Pink Grapefruit Juice (1/2 a Grapefruit)

Crushed Ice

Aidy’s Choice: Mirabeau Rosé Negroni

Negronis are, by their nature, one of the most adaptable cocktails and I adore this rosé led version. All three work together to elevate the fresh floral and citrus notes, and the underlining herbs add a tonne of depth from the background to round it off. Immensely refreshing and a lip-smacker alright. Simply add the Mirabeau Dry Rosé Gin, Lillet Rosé and Luxardo Bitter Bianco into a tumbler filled with plenty of ice and stir gently until the ice starts to melt. Take the zest of a grapefruit and wipe it around the rim of the glass. Pinch the zest to express a little oil, add it as a garnish and enjoy!

Colin’s Choice: Mirabeau Rosé G&T

There are cans of Mirabeau Dry Rosé Gin & Tonic in Waitrose, but this cocktail version is a notch above if I can be so bold. The floral Mediterranean tonic with its herbal notes complements similar notes in the gin and provides a really light and refreshing base. The Angostura bitters emphasise the citrus fruitiness and embolden the cocktail to become more than just a refresher.

Place some ice in a large wine glass and gently wipe the rim of the glass with the zest of grapefruit. Pour in the Mirabeau Riviera Dry Rosé Gin, the tonic, and add the drops of angostura. Stir gently with the sprig of rosemary which also makes the perfect garnish once you’re finished. Perfection.
